Maybe, maybe not. What it will do, though, is greatly reduce the number of players in the portal which could still lower spending if you aren't having to recruit 5-7 guys at inflated salaries and only have to bring in 2 or 3
I believe the portal closing just means you can no longer enter the portal, not that it is the last day that you can join a new school. So we should still see many commitments that take place after that date out of the portal, I'd think.
I think the most interesting thing will be what we prioritize in the portal this year. Every year there seems to be a clear theme in players we target and every year it seems to be different from the last. That's been one of my frustrations with this regime. It doesn't feel like they know what...
Yeah, a lot of the guys for High Point were brought in this season were new, but there were a few holdovers including Terry Anderson and Chase Johnston who both were important players on that team. In my opinion it is also easier to bring in transfers when you have a shown history of winning at...
Huss took over a school that from 2018-2023 (under 2 different HCs) went 58-95. He then proceeded to go 56-15 (27-5 in conference) and make the NCAA tourney. He has a background in developing bigs, and in my opinion Clayman benefitted from the situation that Huss left him. That's not to knock...
Things I've found that work for me in picking upsets in my brackets most years. Pick little schools that 1) win a LOT and 2) have a guard that can get a bucket whenever he wants. The other - and this is arguably the biggest one in my opinion - is to pick AGAINST the high seeds you don't like...
I've got Cal Baptist and Hofstra today (partly because I believe it's possible and partly because I was picking St Johns and Tech through to the sweet 16 anyways)
I'm not saying it is a perfect job, but Syracuse does have more resources than South Florida - and a much higher ceiling. Hodgson likely believes he can hold out for a better job and why wouldn't he? He's only been at USF one year and probably doesn't feel like he needs to jump ship just yet.
Providence and Syracuse are both capable of producing resources that can win more than USF and St Louis. As is Kansas State (already filled) and a number of other programs that have or will have openings this offseason. I think USF and St Louis are at about where their ceilings are currently.
No disagreement here that if Brent and the football team have a bad year this year that discussions should be had, but at this point I actually am bought into the trajectory of the team. I believe as long as we have Brent here, the defense will be very good. He strung together many back to back...
Season 1: Recovery season post-Riley where he inherited one of the worst P5 defenses in the country and quite literally no QBs (6-6)
Season 2: Built some momentum, defense shows improvement, get some stability on the offensive side, show progress (10-2)
Season 3: Much improved defense but...
It may be cheaper (haven't looked at the numbers myself to know either way), but that doesn't matter if revenue falls off a cliff. The margin still won't be there. And I don't think it was added resources that caused the turnaround, it was Venables correcting for a bad OC hire and losing a bet...
