2020 Recruiting

I would rather have 4 year guys like Bieniemy and Hill, than grad transfers like Calixte/Reynolds after missing out on 5 stars.
Hope Thompson decides soon so Lon can move on to other highly ranked prospects, or to 2021 recruits.

Bienemy & Hill weren’t guys OU picked up after they missed out on 5 stars, they were main priorities. Kruger isn’t Capel’s where he goes after a ton of 5 stars just to do it, he’s going after an Oklahoma stud who he has a legit chance with. Calixte/Reynolds contributed to OU getting to the Dance.

You follow ou basketball?

You’re way off base here.

I didn't say they were.

So who did OU miss on to “have” to get Calixte & Reynolds?

No one.
But grad transfers like Calixte/Reynolds are not acceptable backup plans for a missed 5 star.
Surely Lon is recruiting better players. Get someone like Bieniemy/Hill every year and you'll have a damn good team.
Grad transfers and jucos wreak of desperation.

They weren’t, Shepherd & McGusty didn’t buy in & got the boot. Grad transfers are changing the game for teams & you shouldn’t loop them in with jucos. I’d rather wait on Thompson since OU has a built in roster that won’t need anybody next year if they miss out.

Sometimes things go awry and a coach has to go out and find a couple gap fillers/bandaids. It happens to every program (except, perhaps, for a handful of blue bloods), no matter how "unacceptable" it might be to Joe Average Fan.

And as was pointed out above, Calixte and Reynolds each played key roles in vital wins without which we'd not have made the tourney. They were not long-term solutions, obviously, but they were never meant to be. They played hard, represented the university well and helped us make it to the tourney and win a game once we got there.

Without them, last season would have been truly dismal.

Wait, what? All the big boys must be truly desperate. KU gets them every year...

I'm pretty sure the staff had no idea Trae was a one and done, literally no one expected that. Sure the staff could've had a better backup plan for that scenario, but I am sure consideration was made to bring in Calixte/Reynolds for one year rentals so they would have continuity in recruiting and honestly not cause Harmon to jump ship by bringing in a 4 year guy since he committed early. Last year was a survival year, we are not KU/KY.

Despite what a couple posters said above, I'm confident we won't attract any grad transfers after this season. They tend to look for significant playing time and they won't find it here next year at the guard position.
Assuming Thompson goes elsewhere, I'd still like to see Lon take a high school guard like Bieniemy/Hill. You get them acclimated to the program for a season and then they'll be ready to contribute when Reaves/Williams are gone.

No chance to get in on a highly ranked guy this late. We aren’t a blue blood that the player would drop the schools recruiting for over a year. We might find a late bloomer but that isn’t like the two you are mentioning.

Bieniemy was ranked 122 and Hill 131 (Rivals).
Lon shouldn't be getting on someone like that now.
He should have been on them the past year.

You’re out of touch. Top 125 guys aren’t lined up for us to fall back on. Those are 4 stars kids that we had to work hard for.

With 7 new guys and you lead on BT. It’s ok if you miss.

Most likely only a great player like BT would even see minutes over next years guys.

Spot on assessment, Coach!

I complained about our recruiting for two straight seasons, and I still feel my reasons were valid. But I see nothing to complain about now. I’m pleased with our 2019 recruiting class. This may be the deepest team OU fans have seen in years—so deep in fact, there will almost certainly be an epic battle for playing time.

I haven’t been this excited about a season since our Final Four run. Sure, our coaching staff could have signed a five star player or two, and maybe the majority of fans would be happy. But, when I ask myself how many Top 25 recruits we have signed over the years, the answer is always, “not many.” OU has been successful for a very long time with a mix of transfers and three and four star recruits. I would love to see more with five stars next to their name. I’m also a realist.

Trae is the only guy I remember waiting out, and we got him. Am I missing somebody else? Our recent woes haven't been because we were shooting for the stars.

Ou osu ku Texas unc MSU Arkansas and maybe another 1
