Despite struggling all game on offense these 3 plays were huge.

Davion missing his 1 and 1.

Gibson’s near steal which went from a break away layup to a three in the corner for Tech.

The foul on Harkless off the Tech miss without about a minute to go.

Any of these go the other way it could have been the difference.

We had a couple of near-steals late that both resulted in open (and sadly, made) threes. Kevin Henry, during the radio broadcast, said Gibson shouldn't have been going for the steal at that point, that we should have stuck with "honest defense" (I think that was the term he used), and I have to admit I agreed at the time (especially when we gave up a second three under similar circumstances seconds later), but in mulling it over, I'm not sure what I think. A steal for a breakaway bucket would have been a great play, of course, but those threes were certainly killers (though, to their credit, the guys erased much of that 10-point deficit).

We were playing such good defense and they hadn't hit many threes (just three to that point), so an argument can certainly be made (and not just in retrospect) that good, solid "honest" defense was the way to go at that point.

It goes both ways. we wouldn't have been at the point we were with good honest defense. We had quite a few steals that we did get that would have provided them with an open shot if we weren't successful earlier in the game

The "foul" on Harkless on that rebound attempt was a terrible call. He was boxing the guy out and the dude fell over him. Their guy Micah Peavy was bulldozing our guys all game getting rebounding position only to never get called.

That is the frustrating part about basketball.

Yeah. His point, I think, was that at that point in a tight game, don't take big chances that might burn you. Easy to say in retrospect, of course (though, to his credit, he said it immediately after the play, not later).

Had the steal attempt paid off, it could have been a key play in the game. As it turned out, it was a key play, but for the wrong reasons.

Agree completely, and the one and one was especially frustrating. We are a very good free throw shooting team but we seem to have missed more than our share of front ends lately. And in a game like last night where offense was so hard to come by, even one miss from the line is crucial.

If you get deep into NCAA officiating principles, one of their big ones is to "call the first foul." In that scenario, the Tech player initiated the entire thing by "laying" on Harkless to prevent him from getting free to the ball. Harkless's "foul" (if it was a foul at all) was in response to that action.

This was such a poorly officiated game from the standpoint of the freedom of movement and elimination of excessively physical play that the NCAA has claimed it's been trying to implement. This game is the exact sort of rock fight those principles are designed to eliminate.

Not saying it was all one sided. OU gave as good as it got at times. I'm just saying the officials let Tech play this game on Tech's terms. They completely abandoned the "freedom of movement" principles in favor of "letting them play" and the game devolved into a tedious grind.

I didn’t watch the replay yet but thought the same while watching it live.

Agree. Turning points.
