Seq. Tahlequah repeats as champs

Sequoyah Tahlequah coach Larry Callison wrapped his arm around the shoulder of senior forward Allison Sells.

Sells’ arms were wrapped around the crutches that supported her weight as she stood next to her coach, feeling the effects of a severe knee injury suffered in the first half Saturday night.

Sequoyah Tahlequah won the Class 3A girls state basketball championship for the third time in four years with a 53-51 victory over Kingston at State Fair Arena.

“We played so hard just to win this for her,” Callison said, glancing at Sells, whose eyes were still red from the postgame tears.

“She’s been our glue. Just the sweetest kid in the world. This is her second knee injury. I think our kids just said, ‘Hey, we’re gonna suck it up,’ and they did.”

Alexys Keys had 18 points and Jonia Walker had 13 for Sequoyah Tahlequah, which won its sixth title since 2005.

“(Sells) really brings up the team,” Walker said. “She knows how to do her job when she’s on the court.”

Kingston led 25-22 at the half and started the third quarter with a 6-0 run, appearing to take control. But the physicality of the game played into Sequoyah Tahlequah’s style, and Kingston began to find it difficult to score.
“We realized we had to get a little bit physical,” Callison said. “Jonia Walker and Lana Gass got physical. They just played a great ballgame.”

Kingston led 38-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, and saw the lead gradually slip away.

“This season, we’ve been more physical from playing teams like Adair and Fort Gibson,” said Walker, who had a teamhigh nine rebounds. “It really helped us playing them, and we grew as a team.”

Kes Reeves led Kingston with 18 points, while Brit Henderson added 15 and Avri Weeks had 10.

“People don’t realize how hard it is to win back-to-back state championships,” Callison said. “You’ve got to have a special group of kids, and I’ve been blessed with that.”
