I must admit to some confusion. Is there a reason that a freshman, like Stewart, wasn't invited? Is this just for upperclassmen?
The U19 players could have been placed on the WUG team, if deemed needed.
I would have put Stewart on the WUG team. Even though she is a freshman she is much more advanced in development than most freshman. I cant see how her playing on the U19 team helps her as I cant believe the competition on other World teams is even close to her at an U19 level. I guess having her on the U19 makes them a certain winner.
In 2011, the last WUG, held in China, both Sims from Baylor and Chiney Ogwumike from Stanford both played on that team as players who just completed their freshmen year.
Of the 4 forwards for the USA team, Plaisance, Hooper and Harberts are very mobile. A bit surprised that Reshanda Gray/Cal made the team as she might be the only player to not be a starter of the 12 who made it. However, without seeing the tryouts she might have had a great camp. She has upside just needs to watch her elbows and her reach in fouls, IMO. Not shocked Brandon didn't make the team, I have seen her disappear in several games this past year including a loss in the Pac12 semi finals vs UCLA and the NCAA game in the Elite 8 vs Georgia. Brandon also gets a ton of offense rebounds from her own misses, and rebounds and misses again. She has had some great games but needs much more consistency.
The other forwards who weren't taken were Burdick and Harrison from Tennesee, Christoffferson from ISU, Hammond from Lousiville, and Stallworth from Kentucky. Probably makes sense to have one of them on the team vs all the guards that were taken. Glad to see Vegas make the team.
Forwards who turned down invitations to the WUG were Chiney Ogwumike(studying in Nigeria until late June), Steph Dolson from UConn and E. Williams from Duke, recovering from nagging injuries, and I guess A. Thomas from Maryland, not sure why she didnt go.
