I think it has to do with differing coaching philosophy. It appears Kim wants to get her top 7-8 players ready for the season. Sherri appears to want everyone to get as many minutes as possible against poor competition.
No doubt holding anyone to 20 points is impressive.
You may be right about the philosophy. And part of Sherri's method may be to find the fill-in for Gioya while she is out. Another may be to plan to sub a lot due to faster games this year.
