I was watching the highlights from last night's scrimmage. There was almost no sound, save for the squeaking of sneakers on the hardwood.

Here's my question: If someone invented squeak-free shoes and they were widely adopted, would you miss that sound when watching hoops?

Yes. I played on a lot of courts 60 years ago that never sqeeked because there was virtually no ability to cut or stop quickly. The floors were worn out. Today’s kids would compare it to playing on dirt.

I would miss it because when I hear that sound it makes me think about my short time as a basketball player which I loved.

Oddly enough though, I have heard people who are not basketball fans cite that noise as one reason they do not watch games. I barely hear it anymore.

I agree, most games, it barely registers with me. Every now and then if I am listening to a game on the radio and I am not distracted by anything, I will hear it if the mics are good, but that's about it. Like you say, if anything, I think it brings back good memories of playing.

I am anti-selling tickets, so all about doing away with all entertainment, t-shirt tosses, and watching a pure basketball game for what it is. Just like watching great players in a pick-up game. The purity of it.

However, I also have a kid now and get why all that crap is involved. $$$
