His days are not numbered fella. This reminds me of what cats were saying about Mack Brown a while back. Barnes isn't going any where. He isn't the greatest coach out there, but he has done things at Texas that are unmatched by anyone before him. That doesn't mean we don't want more, but he has many achievements at Texas. And it will get better.

By the way, here is what Barnes had to say when defending his quote.

“I’ve always said that I think our job here is to help these guys realize their dreams,” Barnes said today. “If you asked me today would I rather win a national championship or keep these guys back from what they need to do, I’d say absolutely not.

“If you help these guys develop the potential that they have, that is gonna help you win a national championship one day.

“I can tell you this: We are happy for what’s happened to Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin and all those guys as we would be winning a national championship.

“First of all, how many teams want to win the national championship? Everybody. There’s one a year. That’s your goal. That’s what you strive for. But we have an obligation to these guys who are here trying to help us do that. That’s my point.

“Anybody is crazy to think that all coaches don’t want to win the national championship. But the fact is, we have more obligation than just that.”

I like what he said. I'm sure the kids do also. I guess they didn't get the memo from ms. cleo that Barnes is on his way out.

that is some serious spin. He's definitely been taking PR lessons from Mack- the ultimate politician. Best of luck with Aggie tomorrow. Your boys are going to need it. I'll be interested to see how J'Covan handles the pressure of two difficult road tests (A&M, Baylor) and the tourneys in the weeks to come.

I have to admit that I have been impressed with Barnes and the UT staffs' ability to keep him under control this year emotionally. I spoke with one of his former coaches a few months ago and from the stories told... Ron Artest has nothing on J'Covan.

He may have the appropriate attitude. These players like all students go to college to advance their opportunities in life. If he is truly more concerned for the player's future than what he gets out of them, then I applaud him

We think these guys play for us or they play for OU. They are students preparing for a future. If that future is really in the NBA, then yes that is more important than a college team.

Fact: If Texas keeps pulling in top 5 classes, they'll be in position to win an NC. Barnes's biggest issue has been not keeping players to stay the extra year. He keep Aldrich, Ford, or Augustin to stay a little longer, who knows what happens.

I can't imagine that will go over well with the decision makers in Austin. You all might think I am crazy for saying this but we are talking about a school that has the largest athletic budget in the nation- $130 million roughly. Not competing for national championships will be unacceptable to them in any sport. I don't care what their basketball history was before Barnes.

If he loses to Baylor for the third time in a row this Saturday... the wolves will be at the door. His days are numbered. He has plateaued that program. Watch.

I don't think the AD will be on Barnes for losing to Baylor but with the collapse of the team and a 3rd straight loss to Baylor, Barnes probably will start to feel some heat from the Alumni. I would think the UT fans are almost as upset as the OU fans. Obviously the situations are different but UT was ranked No. 1 and it is questionable whether they should even be ranked at this point.

I highly doubt that. He's 2 years removed from an Elite 8 appearance, and he had plenty of success with them before that. He's had too much success over the past decade to start feeling heat now.

I don't see what the big deal with what Barnes said. I really don't. I think some are looking for something that isn't here.
What he said (and in BLH's follow up quotes) is spot on.

Look at it from an academic standpoint. Do you think a teacher strives more to win the academic bowl or would rather have the 5 members of the team go on and get their MBA's, Doctorates and become CEO's of companies?
Let's get some respective here. Teachers/Coaches most important jobs are teaching life lessons and developing the youth to be all they can be outside of college...in life.

I wouldn't be comparing Capel to Barnes right now when it comes to attitudes of the players they recruit. Not very good timing there.

I would read my post again if I were you. I'm strictly talking about school backgrounds and where these Coaches have come from. Look back at the places where Barnes has coached and played. Don't see too many championships do ya. Coach Capel came from a school that is a championship factory. Therefore he knows what the quest for one is like. I did comprehend and it just doesn't make sense. One would say that Duke also recruits high character clean cut kids that don't get in trouble and play unselfish and put the team first. That doesn't mean every team is that way.
What about Quin Snyder...he's a Duke guy.
