I thought we might learn something by looking at how the freshmen rank in the statistics produced by the conference. We will look only at conference games since non-conference schedules vary so widely in difficulty. Of course as we move forward these numbers will need to be updated - and are likely to change.

One thing you will notice is that some of our members are vastly underrating the production of Chelsea Dungee. In addition to fully appreciate these numbers you must consider the minutes each player is on the court. It turns out that the only players who compare at all with Nancy & Chelsea are playing almost full games every contest:

Kianna Ray (TCU) 36.0 minutes/game
Brittany Brewer (TT) 32.0 minutes/game
Joyner Holmes (UT) 28.0 minutes/game

Nancy & Chelsea play far fewer minutes per game.

Now here are the numbers (no freshman appears on the conference stats unless shown here)

Scoring
18. Chelsea Dungee 13.0
23 Nancy Mulkey 11.0
30 Kiana Ray (TCU) 9.5

Rebounding
4 Brittany Brewer (TT) 9.0
10 Joyner Holmes (UT) 7.5
11 Kianna Ray (TCU) 7.0
11 Nancy Mulkey 7.0

Field Goal Pct
2 Nancy Mulkey .714
7 Alecia Sutton (UT) .600
14 Chelsea Dungee .500

Free Throw Pct
9. Chelsea Dungee .875
10. Kiana Ray (TCU) .857
13 Arella Guirantes (TT) 800

3-point Pct
3 Kianna Ray (TCU) .600
6 Chelsea Dungee .500

Blocked Shots
1 Nancy Mulkey 6.5
7 Brittany Brewer (TT) 2.0
9 Arella Guirantes (TT) 1.5
9 Joyner Holmes (UT) 1.5
9 Lauren Cox (BU) 1.5
14 Natalie Chou (BU) 1.0
14 Kianna Ray (TCU) 1.0

Friends, we are very fortunate to have two tremendous freshmen on our team this year. It does beg the question as to why so many on here were so pessimistic about last years recruiting. Please. Don't put too much weight on the recruiting services. They are totally dominated by politics.

Great post! Will be interesting to follow this during the season.

Totally agree on recruiting sites, as well.

Good post. You mean that we are not supposed to be disappointed in the failures of Dungee and Mulkey?

I think we are beginning to see the possibilities that Nancy presents. Like Courtney, she is unique. But, she will likely be the tallest person on the court for four years.

When we got Courtney, we got four McDonald's All-Americans in two years. But, all four played essentially the same position, underneath the basket. We had the ability to dominate inside. But, we had some talented guards who had undergone some ACL injuries, and we never had an outside to go with our inside, probably better as a freshman and senior (DRob).

With Nancy, we have the defensive dominance inside. Chelsea is demonstrating that she has a lot of tools, and she can shoot. Her weaknesses stem from overzealous enthusiasm.

Now, consider the next set of recruits. We kind of need a strong rebounder on the floor with Nancy. Enter Mandy Simpson ("indefatigable rebounder") a 6-0 to 6-2 forward, depending on which site you see (SoonerSport says 6-0). You kind of need a good point guard. Enter Shaina Pellington ("Her ability to break down the defense with the ball and find the open guy is extraordinary"--Sherri). We have seen her compared in speed to DRob. We also could use another scorer to go with Chelsea. Enter Ana Llanusa, a 6-0 guard who is as good as any senior in the nation this year.

You just look at those five, and you see the pieces. I would love to see Maddie stay for a year and help them get their feet on the ground. But, that is a group that all you want for a recruit to do is to be able to be a part of that. The inside and outside are there.

Great post, I agree Courtney never had the guards around her needed to win it all until we got Drob and Hand... which showed because we got to the final four, but it was a little to late. Now Mulkey has a great deal of experience around her and it goes a long way... Dungee and Ana will be the type of players needed to score points and take pursue off Mulkey..

In a perfect world our 2018 class would have Tatum Veitenheimer who is a scoring guard and Aquria Decosta a rebounder deluxe...

It helps to have a Nancy if you want a Tatum. Any prospect who doesn't see the possibilities of playing with Nancy isn't worth recruiting.

on the topic of on recruiting sites, basted off Hoopgurlz, Little and manning were #30 and #34 in the 2013 class, Ortiz was #13 ViVi was #96 in the 2014 class and Mulkey #19 while Dungee was #61 in the 2016 class.... I would say these are our 6 best players and high school ranking reflect that... If a kid is ranked in the top 100 they'll have a better chance at success on the next level...

Do you use an oven or a slow cooker when preparing HoopGurlz? I like to use an oven brush to baste bread just before it browns.

I figure that being in the top hundred is better than not being. But, I keep wondering how Dungee could fall so far after she made the U-16 team, and Mulkey fell after making it twice. Seems like being selected by a respected coach for an international team is not as highly-prized as what some AAU scout says according to HoopGurlz.

I'm impressed with the maturity of Chelsea. She plays like a junior.

How are these numbers looking now?

That's a good question.

I looked at the Big-12 stats but since they only list about 10 to 15 names in any of the lists, almost no Freshmen are there, so it would take someone willing to go into each team's actual stats - on the school websites - to get an interesting list.

As you would expect, getting listed in the top handful of one of the lists by this point in the season means you must get lots of minutes in every game - and most teams stick with veterans for enough minutes that Freshmen are not able to build up stats. For example, we feel like Chelsea Dungee has played quite a bit - but she is not even listed in the "minutes played" list.

It is apparent that Holmes at Texas has posted the best numbers - and pretty impressive numbers at that - but has also played huge numbers of minutes herself. You may have noticed, for example, that she played 34 minutes in a recent game - and is regularly playing comparable minutes. Cox appears a few times - and is another one getting reasonable minutes. In addition one other player (from TCU maybe) has enough minutes to get in some lists. Both Nancy and Chelsea are seen - but in lists that measure mostly skills rather than time on the floor.

I'm a bit surprised the Big-12 doesn't list complete stats. It would make all this interesting to follow. Perhaps someone on here could find the time to compile those.

Nancy is no doubt a project.

She has good feet for her size, she just doesn't know how to use them yet! Because she doesn't move her feet she can struggle w/ the more talented posts. But she hast a HUGE ceiling. I could see her get accustomed to it all quickly too and having a good second half of conference.

Don't put too much weight on the recruiting services. They are totally dominated by politics.

I'm new to recruiting ins and outs, so I don't really understand this comment. I've heard other people say similar things about the McDonald's All American selection process. How are politics involved with these recruiting services?
