Gillispie arrested for DUI

ESPN.com news services

Police have charged former Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie with drunken driving.

Police dispatcher Todd Sparrow said Lawrenceburg police arrested Gillispie and took him to the nearby Franklin County Regional (Ky.) Jail.

Gillispie, who was driving a 2009 white Mercedes, was pulled over around 2:45 a.m. ET in Kentucky. He refused to take a breathalyzer or blood alcohol test, WLEX-TV in Lexington is reporting.

Gillispie, 50, reportedly told police that he and his male passenger were returning from a golfing trip. The passenger was reportedly charged with public intoxication.

It is the third time that Gillispie has been arrested on alcohol-related driving charges. However, in one case the charge was dismissed and in the other he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, reckless driving.

Gillispie, who was fired March 27, was working under a seven-year memorandum of understanding but hadn't signed a formal contract during the two years he coached the Wildcats.

Gillispie sued the University of Kentucky Athletics Association in federal court in Dallas on May 27, claiming fraud and breach of contract. Gillispie claims the school never intended to sign him to a long-term deal. The school has denied the allegations. He is seeking at least $6 million -- about $1.5 million per year for four of the five years he says were left on his agreement.

The University of Kentucky countersued Gillispie, claiming it doesn't owe him pay because he never signed a contract.

UK's lawyers are asking the court to rule that the two-page memorandum of understanding Gillispie signed after his hiring in 2007 was not the equivalent of a full contract.

The athletics association has asked a federal judge in Texas either to dismiss Gillispie's lawsuit over his firing or to move the case to Kentucky. In a motion filed in federal court, the association's attorneys say the school has minimum contact with the state of Texas, giving the court there no jurisdiction to hear Gillispie's claims.

The association's attorneys also claim the University of Kentucky, not the athletics association, hired Gillispie and paid him.

Gillispie went 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats, including a 22-14 mark last season that tied for the second-most losses in the program's 106-year history. A stumble down the stretch left the Wildcats out of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991.

I don't think we needed a police report to prove Gillispie was a bit of a drinker.

That's true. But drinking and then driving after you do are entirely different matters.

One has to wonder if Billy G's once ballyhooed career will ever be the same following his much-publicized flop as a head coach at UK? I doubt if this latest incident will help his cause in trying to land another job with a major program.

Billy will be sentenced to 7 days for the DUI and 2 years for losing to Gardner Webb.

What a dip to still live in Kentucky after getting canned.

I love me some BCG...he doesn't give an eff right now.

The only reason Gardner Webb beat Kentucky was because their best player was a JUCO transfer named Aaron Linn. (there's your JUCO shoutout, ABD).

Lol... the juco ranks are making a comeback. Book it.

he looked awful on the sidelines last year. didn't even look like the same guy we saw at A&M.

GEt this dude some help, Bill.

for real. i forget where (maybe here or maybe texags.com) but about a month ago there were pics of him living pretty large at a bar in Fort Worth on the net....in the context of him angling for the TCU job.

Kentucky is quickly having a Mount Rushmore of deliquent coaches. First you have a coach widely regarded as a racist in Adolph Rupp. Then you Eddie Sutton who was shipping money and ended his career on a wild drunk driving escapade. Next you have Rick Pitino who's having sex a staff member's wife in the bathroom. Now they have BCG and Calipari. What a collection.

New details are emerging about what police say happened in the minutes before officers arrested former UK basketball coach Billy Gillispie.

He was charged with DUI after the arrest early Thursday morning in Lawrenceburg.

WYMT Mountain News has now learned the 911 call to police, that reported Gillispie was driving drunk, actually came from an employee at a Shell station on Highway 127 in Anderson County.

Employees at the Shell told police Gillispie came into the store, seemed disoriented, and was visibly drunk.

They told police when he got back into his car, and drove off, they called 911 because they were concerned.

Minutes later, police pulled over Gillispie on Highway 127. According to the police report, officers say they smelled alcohol on his breath, and he had slurred speech.

Gillispie has pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge.

He has since gone back home to Texas. He will be back in Kentucky next month for a court date.

Concerned my butt. This is Kentucky....these boozers all the time coming into that store....they said we're going to get that SOB that tried to hurt our beloved Kentucky Wildcats. :D
Why Gillespie is still hangin' around Kentucky is beyond me.

He'll be an assistant at KU in a year or two.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit. Joe Dooley has interviewed for head jobs the last two years. If he leaves it could be Gillespies or Barry Hinsons

This is pretty funny, if you believe the stories he supposedly drove home drunk 5 times a week with a police escort before being fired. Shoulda kept the perks in mind Billy boy.

That's two! Now who's gonna let there son play for a guy like that. I guess this explains some of those wild scholarship offers that he was slinging about.
