Blair or Newell?

I don't think you can say either one. You take it on a game by game basis. If Blair is struggling, see what Calvin can do. If Calvin struggles, get Blair back in. Both are very young and very inconsistent, so it's not really possible to give a blanket answer to your question.

+1

I don't think we can be consistent with either.

Newell is not a point guard, and still has a lot to learn to even be on the floor as a shooting guard that is helping the team.

Blair has a lot of weaknesses that I think are physical, making them hard to improve on.

I'd play Blair mostly (unless he is stinking the place up). With only 3 games left most likely, it really isn't a big deal at this point.

I honestly do not know but neither are very good.

Both, they each have major weaknesses...neither trumps the other, just depends on what you look for in a point guard...

What I like is a guy that values the ball, plays great defense and makes you pay if you leave him open with the 3 point shot. I have always thought Bob Hurley was the perfect college pg. I fully appreciate there have been guys that are better, I just like him as a great example of what a point should be.

What I find almost impossible to believe is that between North Texas and Oklahoma we have not been able to really find that type of player and get them into our program over the course of the last 10 years. Not one.

This is what I liked about Quannis White and Rickey Grace. Both were really good 3 point shooters, but rarely shot unless the defense was busy covering everybody else.

As for Blair/Newell...I say you go with Newell. He at least has D1 potential and is better on defense and a better shooter. I think he is equally as good as taking the ball to the bucket and then dishing it as he proved in the KU game. To me, he has way more upside because he has improved as the year has gone along, but Blair seems like he did early in the season. Still very turnover prone, not a good shooter, and not a good defender.

I'm sure I'll be flamed within a few minutes though...

Blair. Newell is a shooting guard.

Everyone agrees on that, but that wasn't the question. Some, as do I, think Newell runs the point overall better than Blair, which goes to show we really have a big problem if we don't land a good or great TRUE point guard in this year's class (e.g. Cezar).

I think AJ could have been that type of player. He might not have been a true pg, but I think he could have performed at a pretty high level as a pg, health issues aside.

I think that he is the closest we have had, but even he came into the program as a shooting guard. Personally, I loved his game, but it certainly wasn't a "typical" point guard position that he played.

And some, like me, think Newell sucks at the point. At least with Blair there's some chance he'll make a play driving to the basket or dishing off to an open shooter.

I just pray we get over half court with Newell at the point. And then, if we do, that he won't turn it over after that.

37 assists and 27 TO's for Newell so far. That's horrendous.

I don't mind he and Blair together, though. Together, they almost equal one solid ball handler.

My thoughts...

I think Newell would be much better if he had played more early in the season. I thought he looked pretty good down the stretch of the KU game, but maybe KU had backed off by then, who knows.

As I said earlier, Newell has more upside than Blair. He's not a better PG now, but in time I think he will be quite a bit better, so why not give him the chance since the season is over.

I agree 100%

Blair does a much better job of running our offense, unfortunately he is like a poker player on tilt, and can blow up at anytime.

The fact that we are even debating between a natural point guard and a natural 2 guard to run the point speaks volumes about Blair. :ez-laugh:
