Brooks Thompson RIP

Helluva basketball player. Thought for a long time he would be their next coach, too.

Sad. I have a story about Brooks Thompson. I casually knew him. He was always polite and nice.

When my son was in HS back in the mid-90's, he worked several basketball camps with OSU players/coaches because we lived nearby. Ponca City had hired a young assistant coach with OSU roots, Ron Arthur (now HC at Shawnee), and we got to know Ron well. He was young and single, so he had a lot of dinners at our house.

One Saturday our son and Ron went to a game at OSU that started at 1:00, and was a pretty big game. We watched the game on TV. The 2 guys showed back up at our house about 11:00 that night. I asked what they did after the game and they said they went back to Big Country and Brooks' apartment, ordered pizza, and they all played video games for several hours. I remember laughing thinking these guys were star athletes but they were still just big normal kids at heart.

Sad to think one of them is gone so soon. My prayers go out to Brooks' family.

I am a couple of years older than Brooks. It is so shocking to see my peers dying. We were never going to die. We were young and invincible. We took stupid risks because death wasn't real. Where did the time go?

Brooks sounded like a heck of a good guy. What a blessed life. Great college athlete, a stint in the NBA, coaching the game he loved and having a nice family. Very sad it ended too soon.

I am the same age as Brooks and you are right it is shocking to see our peers dying. I've already lost about 5-10 friends from high school, some were not necessarily friends as in I hung out with them, but people I knew. A number of them from self induced cirrhosis (alcoholics) but one from appendix cancer, one from a stroke, and one from leukemia. In addition, I am still shocked -- now 6 or 7 years later -- about Waymans death, Steve Owens and Jack Mildren too. All of them in the prime of their lives!

I don't really have a Brooks Thompson story. He was one of the aggies I hated the most (when he played) because he was a trash talker and he was good. I too expected him to be OSU's coach at some point, it seemed like a logical fit. A friend from HS posted on FB yesterday he used to play with Brooks at the Colvin Center (at OSU; like Huff-n-puff at OU). He said Brooks "was one of the good guys". He was always cordial to the non-athletes and even very friendly. It's a shame people like him die so soon.
