Some possibilities....

We're going to go cheap. We're losing money, we don't have a big class to hold together and I'm assuming we're still on the hook for Capel's buyout. An assistant seems like a likely option or a small school coach. Here are some of the names I'd consider.

Russell Springmann - Texas assistant
Scott Spinelli - Texas A&M assistant
Philip Pearson - Georgia assistant
Gary Close - Wisconsin assistant
Brett Gunning - Villanova assistant
Orlando Antigua - Pittsburgh assistant

Terry Evans - Central Oklahoma head coach
Marvin Menzies - New Mexico head coach
Chris Mooney - Richmond head coach
Donnie Tyndall - Morehead State head coach
Mike Jarvis - Florida Atlantic head coach
Herb Sendek - Arizona State head coach
Chris Mack - Xavier head coach
Randy Bennett - St. Mary's head coach
Brian Gregory - Dayton head coach
Dana Altman - Oregon head coach

Any thoughts?

I don't think Chris Mack should be an candidate. He's still doing it with Sean Miller's players. He's a question mark.

I may be clueless but I've liked Blaine Taylor's style at ODU. I find this hard to believe, but the site I found says he only makes $212k in 2010.

Basketball always loses money. Going cheap is a sure formula to lose more money.

Don't know much about the UT assistants, but I've seen their names mentioned for other jobs this year. That might be a way to go.....

I always pine for an Izzo disciple, but Bo Ryan has been a very good coach at Wisconsin and that route might be fruitful.

I think rather than going cheap we are going to go established. They took a leap of faith on Caple and it didn't work out. I think they are going to find someone that has been a consistent winner at an established program.

Fact is, there aren't a lot of experienced, big school coaches that are going to be available for OU. Gillespie is one. Maybe Buzz is one. That list might be 5 people long though. If it doesn't work out with them, or they aren't interested, we're going to have to grab another small school guy, or an assistant. That is just the way it is. Nothing wrong with that. Tubbs and Kelvin did just fine as "cheap" hires.

The important thing is finding the right, cheap hire. This better be a defensive minded coach, and preferably, somebody that can recruit to his system well.

Haven't several of the Bennett family been successful head coaches?
OU would be step up from St. Mary's. And I think he has a pipeline to overseas players which would help in a quick fix.

My vote is for Toby Keith.

Has to be a leading candidate.

OU wouldn't pay for a coach after Sampson, when they very well could have. Now they'd have to pay huge money to get a coach to want to come into the current circumstances and in coaching circles Oklahoma isn't known as a very good job as it is (which I know those of us who know the history of OU basketball find it hard to believe). I still think Joe will go about it the same way. Hire someone with a lot of potential for cheap.

No more pipelines.
