Starting five:

Vivi
Simpson
LaNesia
Gabbi
Maddie

Surprised?

I know its against Central.

But Manning at the point looks insanely good. Such a better pace, and such a better passer than Ortiz. I really like this...

Nesi is also looking VERY improved.

Nice twist, I expect Manning to play the 4, she’s really versatile.

42-29 at the half. The only player who has stood out is Mandy Simpson. Two of two from the field, three of four from the line, and nine rebounds at the half. She got three offensive boards on one possession.

Scorekeeper needs glasses. Had three turnovers on Maddie. She actually had one. There were two inbound passes intended for Maddie, but they threw it four feet over her head. Bad entry passes.

Vivi is flat-footed. EJ looking improved. OU started well in shooting. Then, everyone began to miss. Maddie has 8. Mandy has 7. Ana has 7. Gabbi has 6 on two threes. We shot 39% (29% in the second quarter).

Mandy is going to be a great player for us. Love her grit.

I really like the way this looks. Gabbi is great when she can square up.

I love the Freshman, Ana will be a good scorer. Pellington is electric. and Mandy add a lot of toughness.

We technically finally 2 bigs playing, I'm sure that will make everyone very excited on this board lol.

Maddie looks she is going to have a big year. Though, a couple careless pos. I like this team this year, I really do.

I do despise this scorekeeper. Maddie was credited with five turnovers. She had one. The last one was a steal by Maddie which he called a turnover on Maddie. Get this nut out of here.

Mandy: 17 rebounds, 13 offensive. 7 points. What I noticed is that she had no fear inside. Rather than hesitate, she put the ball up when she got it inside, a rather quick move that she didn't miss. She missed a couple of jump shots.

The freshmen all did one thing very nicely. They hit their layups. We didn't see a bunch of great drives with missed layups. They all had some issues that they need to work on. Llanusa has to learn when to dribble and when to shoot. But, once she relaxed, she was a pretty deadly shooter. Started slowly. Shaina also tried too much too soon. Two of Maddie's turnovers were actually missed inbounds passes by Shaina who threw them about four feet over Maddie's head. Must have thought Maddie was going to jump into the lane. But, Shaina relaxed in open court, and she was really quick. She gets down court, and she hits her layups. Fast breaks went well.

EJ was improved. Vivi was hesitant. Better on defense than offense.

UCO is a pretty good team. Their experience exposed our freshmen. But, they came on strong at the end.

They did let UCO hit our posts in the head on multiple occasions. Bad officiating. A "basketball move" does not mean clearing out the defender with an elbow to the eye.

Ana was the leading scorer with 20 points on 9 of 20 shooting, even tho not great numbers, I’m just glad we have someone willing to take shots...

A lot like recent OU teams. Good runs, then dry spells as we stop moving the ball and moving away from the ball and forced shots and drives. Some exceptions.

We are going to like Gabbi a lot more at the #2.

Simpson a big help on the boards. Quicker and better hands than I expected. Will get a lot of garbage points and probably will develop a decent mid range shot.

Llanusa and Pellington show quickness and ability to get open. Just need to adjust to the difference in being open in high school and in Div I. Llanusa a nice ability to score with a good variety of shots.

Giving up too many open shots on ball screens and not covering corners and other long range shooters.

I don't think Maddie played enough at the point to see what she can contribute there. Still not pushing to get shots. ViVi still having trouble shooting over taller players. Good boards and defense though.

Freshmen look good. Will be interesting how they continue to develop.

Good to see a little high low action.

Crowd looked very sparce.

Any roster adjustments that allow Manning to play a more perimeter focused game is a huge upgrade for OU.
Manning stuck at PF full time really does not allow Manning to shine instead of being a point small forward.
Not surprised at all that Llanusa looks this good, this early.
Simpson/Pellington are potential wildcards for this team. Simpson allowing Manning to stay at SFPG. Pellington allowing Ortiz to focus on SG.

Simpson seems to have that court awareness that tells her where to go and where to be. She is going to be good.

Two things really kept us from learning too much: how good is UCO and we were making some mistakes of a type that I doubt we make in two months (I hope). I was a bit disappointed with Vivi. She wasn't settled down like I thought she would be as a senior. Her biggest problems were trying to force action rather than taking what is available. She took a couple of long shots and tried dribbling from the top of the key. Ouch!

Gabbi does seem to be a senior. I was pleased that she didn't really do anything wrong. She got rebounds, seemed to be in the path on defense, and shot well. I don't remember her having turnovers. She seems to relish this role.

Mandy---I just hope she can do this in a D-1 game. While many stand around waiting for the ball to come to them, she goes after everything. She assumes that it is hers until it is lost. She wasn't making spectacular plays. She was just going to get the ball. If you hustle to it, it seems that you have an advantage. Curiously, she was not effective on the defensive boards. Maddie was better on defensive boards. I like how she just goes up as though nobody would try to stop her. It is quick enough that it may just work. Seems to do better when she is a part of the flow.

Shaina may be as good as DRob. She has a soft touch around the basket. She didn't get the roll, which she should have with such a gentle touch on the rim. But, she explodes. Fast breaks tend to get there before the defense. No idea if she can shoot.

LaNesia is better. I didn't see anything spectacular. But, I didn't see her do anything bad either. Last year, she made some mistakes. She really played into the flow of availability. I don't see her as a starter. But, she will be valuable.

Ana can shoot. She just doesn't miss layups, and she seems to know how to get to the rim, something that often involves a when to go to the rim. She hit a three and some fifteen-footers. But, I liked her work under the basket. I'm tired of everyone missing layups, and the freshmen didn't. I wouldn't be surprised if Ana didn't average more than I had anticipated, just because she scores when it is there.

Just now had time to record my observations on Friday nights wbb scrimmabe..
Gabbi played her heart out, better at the 2, and looks good for a great senior year. Maddie makes the team better when she is on the court, but at least for the scrimmage was not an aggressive shooter, and had several turnovers that were her fault. Vivi tough on defense, ok on offense, but to me did not look like she was in "much better conditioning" than last year. Lanesia improved, and will contribute, often given the defense of UCO's quickest player. Penzo still court smart on offense, but definitely a bench player. EJ good on defense, but still deficient on offense for this game. All 3 freshmen showed great promise. Mandy Simpson started and shows grit and every rebound "IS MINE", get out of the way I want it and will work for it. Loved her aggressiveness, but she is tough, not quick. Looking forward to 4 years of hard play all game by her. Pellington is quick, smart, and will be a productive point guard for us. Ana should become a star, works hard on defense, and has inside and outside weapons on offense, likes to pass and seems to be a great team player.
All 3 freshmen appear to be team players, and winners. May be a better team consistency with them than we have had in the past.
