Cezar Guerrero scouting report

If this highlight video is an accurate assessment of Cezar's skills, he's got what the two point guards on our roster don't have: Outstanding handles. I love his crossover, break-your-ankle moves. His shooting stroke also looks good.

Meyer's report on his defense worries me, though. We don't need another player who can't guard his man. He has the quick feet and speed to be a good defender, so hopefully he'll work on that part of his game if OU signs him.

Thanks for the updates and the vid, Sooner23 and Sam!

+1

The parts of this kids game that he excels at are things that you can't really teach. He has great handles, good shooter, good court vision. For a PG to have 8 boards is pretty darn good so you know he attacks the boards because 8 rebounds just don't happen to fall your way. Especially if he is a smaller kid. He's quick! So the kid can be taught how to properly play defense. And if he really does only know how to give 100% then he'll work hard and be a good defender.

I think it's funny that people take one report from some anonymous internet clown that says he plays poor defense and use that as an indictment of not only Guerrero but Capel for recruiting him in the first place.

I'll be honest, I think OU leads as of right now. That's libel to change, but I'm confident they're in the lead to this point.

If we land Cezar, the Capelables need to dress up in crimson Togas next season.

Bingo!!

His height for me is the main issue...

Hey I'm not saying that defense ISN'T the weakest part of his game RIGHT NOW, who knows it may very well be. But I'm not going to totally write off a kid that has numerous MAJOR D-1 programs recruiting him just because some Rivals.com dips**t says he plays poor defense.

Dude put up over 40 big deal, he will blow away in the wind in oklahoma. I also always trust what just one man say about a player, because that man knows everything.

Chillax. Ada nor myself was "using that as an indictment".

Besides, weren't all the "anonymous internet clowns" saying the same thing about Mason's defense?

Which obviously proves that the same is true about Guerrero.

Didn't say that. Now you are putting words in my mouth.

I just believe defense is the most important aspect of any team sport. As Switzer used to say, "offense wins game but defense wins championships".

I'd rather have a lockdown guy who can distribute the ball and score when needed than another TMG.

Hard to evaluate Mr. Guerrero from his highlight film. He never misses a shot and he dribbles like Allen Iverson. The highlight film lacked a bunch: never saw him guarded by anyone significantly taller than him, never saw him dive on the floor or block a shot or drive in against a shot blocker or a hefty center.

Can't decide if he's more like Steph Curry or Jai Lucas. Jai Lucas was a good ball handler who never turned out to be much. Curry was a frail kid with an uncanny shot. Guerrero doesn't look to have the elevation Curry does.

Let's face it: some of you are so down on Capel that you are going to find things to criticize about just about every recruit that he pursues or signs. If he pursues a top recruit he's just wasting his time. If he pursues a relatively unheralded local guy he's just a pathetic recruiter. If he pursues the top remaining point guard in the entire 2011 class, a 4 star recruit that is also being pursued by numerous other top programs, well the kid's just another TMG headcase that won't play any defense.

All I have seen is his tape and my only response was I'm not in love with his game. However, maybe there is more to him that I don't know. Never once did I say we shouldn't recruit him, especially given there is very little remaining in this class.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...overreact much?

I've never criticized him for recruiting an unheralded local guy, like Neal or Washington. In fact, if you go back and check the threads from last year you will see I thought both were good signings, but I don't follow recruiting much. If he is going to recruit a player with little talent, and I'm not saying either one has little talent I'm just making a point, I'd at least prefer it were a local guy instead of some big tall stiff from the Canary Islands or some muslim guy who probably can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I also never called Guerrero a headcase. I just said if somebody who's watched him play, which neither you or me have done, says he doesn't play a lick of defense, then Capel has shown he can't get players like this to play defense and he still allows them to play every night. I think this is a bad combination for a coach trying to save his job. Past performance is an indicator of future results.

I've criticized Capel for a lot and it's all been warranted, but never for recruiting local unheralded guys because good players come out of Oklahoma high schools and almost all of them are unheralded.

Why do you assume that every single point I make is directly leveled at you personally?

Also, why do you place more stock in what Joe Blow from Rivals.com has to say about his game than in the numerous high level schools that are recruiting him?

I was one of the few who agreed we didn't need another player who can't play defense.

I place more stock in Joe Blow than my own analysis because I haven't yet seen him play. That's fine if other schools are recruiting him, they probably have a coach who will make him play defense whereas Capel will let him play without coming to practice or following the conditioning program. Capel doesn't have enough discipline with players to be recruiting a kid who may or may not decide to play 100% all the time.

If we had a disciplinarian coach, I wouldn't care who he recruited.

LMAO did you really just cut and paste his resume on here? I'm sorry, but that means nothing to me. Are we to assume that all of the coaches that are currently recruiting Guerrero are fools because the living legend Jerry Meyer has decreed he is weak defensively?
