Substituted for Sherri on the Thursday night OU interview show at the local restaurant. Sherri was off being something like the hostess of the fourth annual Parkington's Foundation meeting. I didn't get it exactly, but since I have a close friend with Parkinsons, I did get that mention.

His comments:

Gioya is expected back about Christmas. Her program is on schedule. We need her for her ability to drive and create.

Kay Kay is more focused than she has been. She has emerged as a solid force under the basket, and we are better when she is in there. She has cut down on the fouls, which he seemed to say that were often due to fatigue. So, they sub at four minute intervals to keep the posts fresh. He didn't exactly respond to the host's thoughts that a lot of calls on Kay Kay were due to her history rather than actual fouls.

Maddie is emerging. At some point, they expect her to be the best player in the Big Twelve. He didn't say it would be this year. She is already working on her Masters, and the subject of a Ph.D. was mentioned. They didn't reveal the field of study. Said she had 24 hours when she arrived at OU. Said she still had some pain in the knees. But, her confidence is growing. The host mentioned her ability to create for others. Thrailkill said that during a timeout, they called on her to make something happen. She proceeded to throw a beautiful behind the back pass that went right to an opponent.

Peyton has learned a lot about what to do when she is not able to score. This year, she has learned that it is OK to miss. It doesn't prohibit her from shooting. She does other things to win.

He was really proud of Gabbi and her ability to handle pressure. Said she was tired in the first two games, but is now having really good games.

Said that Gabbi got tired while guarding Plum, and she scored ten straight points. They inserted T'Ona, and she shut Plum down. Wouldn't let Plum get into position to shoot. T'Ona is our most-improved player.

Mentioned Vivi in that she has come around quickly after the injury. She is not as quick as Kay Kay, but she is big enough to be a dominant force under the basket. She takes up space.

Sounds like a great interview and an equally great synopsis, syb.

I didn't know Maddie was so advanced with her studies. She's a beast any way you look at it!

If Manning can will Big 12 POY that will sure be something...

Thanks Syb! Glad to hear about Gioya although it may take her a couple of months to be back to 100% normal in conditioning and confidence. I think even just a little bit of Gioya can really help this team (different skill set and depth)!

Maddie's athletic ability is certainly enough to enable her to be the best women's basketball player in the Big XII. I think her biggest handicap is between her ears and mostly the result of two bad acl tears. If and when she completes her recovery, confidence and aggressiveness we will be REALLY good.

Saw the replay on Fox sports last night, Syb pretty much covered it all. One thing to add, Chad mentioned we basically have the same team from last year (minus Sharane and adding EJ). He was proud how the kids have improved and have been able to put things together, especially at the end of games and able to finish. I am too. This team just gets tougher every time they go out. Looking forward to the SEC/Big XII challenge next Sunday. Will be good to see Texas up close and personal, and A&M.

I was occupied elsewhere on the night that we played North Texas, and it is difficult for me to believe that the team that I have seen since that game lost to North Texas for any reason. North Texas isn't as bad as we thought, but it was still an absurd loss.

If you look at our schedule since that time, we haven't been challenged. Utah, BYU, and Boston College weren't bad teams. In fact, both realtime and the NCAA rpi have BYU at #13 (both have us at #32). BYU has performed well since we beat them. But, if you go back and watch the recordings of that game, it wasn't even close. We, with Maddie going off for 13 in the first quarter, looked calm and in absolute control throughout the entire game. BYU has some players that are going to be All-Conference players, perhaps an All-American. But, we totally controlled every aspect of that game for a 26 point win. BYU has since beaten both Utah and Texas A&M, and it wasn't that close.

What may appear to be inconsistency may be a good thing. If one player is cool, another seems to step up. We always find someone to do the scoring. Our domination begins on the defensive end, and nobody has really taken apart our defense.

BC has just the one 15-point loss to OU. They beat Purdue narrowly at Lafayette, IN. They have coasted otherwise.

We are winning rather easily, even against what amounts to pretty good competition at times. We seem to play better against good teams. But, we are almost assured that either Vivi or Kay Kay will play well. We know that at least one other person is going to have a good night. It may be Peyton or Maddie. It may be Gabbi. Someone will step up. At the end of the game, it seems that we were obviously the better team.

I don't think we have unearthed all of the potential yet. We have had moments from some. But, the five who start are those who give us consistently good all-around play, even if not scoring. It seems to be working. I watch other teams struggle, and we really don't.

There are still two major unknowns that will determine how good we can be.
1) Will we get back an effective Carter?
2) How will Treece fit into the system and where.

Both have the potential to make a major impact on the effectiveness of this team.

Other lesser isssues:
Could Wyatt come off the bench as instant offense. She has improved her overall game this year but still runs hot and cold.

Will Edwards and LeNesha Williams develop a better feel for what they can and can not do.

Will our decision making improve.

Assuming KayKay and ViVi hold their own and that one other person steps up, we will still need one more person to compete well in this league. I believe it will be Maddie. We'll prevail if another teammate gets hot as well and it doesnt matter who.

Totally agree! They will be our X factor! ;)

One question to think about is what we will do on a night when the opponent has a good enough inside game to keep KK and Vivi from scoring much. That is likely to happen a few times as we go forward - especially against Baylor and Texas with theri tall inside game.

How will we respond? Who will step up to produce those 20 - 25 points?

Do you agree with this assessment about Manning?
