Choctaw coach Ryan Maloney has told junior Bailey Golden time after time she can be a great player alongside star Ana Llanusa.
Tuesday night, that finally clicked.
Golden scored a careerhigh 30 points in the second-ranked Yellowjackets’ 75-65 victory over Class 5A No. 13 Del City at John Smith Fieldhouse.
“The team was passing the ball, and I was in the right spot,” Golden said.
Maloney said it was more than that.
At a time when Choctaw struggled to put away Del City despite building a 21-point lead, Golden’s performance was a welcome sight.
“We’ve always told her she doesn’t have to play second fiddle,” Maloney said. “She’s a great player. Her game has really matured, and she’s very versatile.
“If we didn’t have that (tonight), we would have been in big trouble.”
Golden also finished the game with 10 rebounds. Llanusa, who has signed with Oklahoma, scored 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Even she was impressed with Golden’s night.
“I’ve always known she can do that,” Llanusa said. “Sometimes she goes into a little shell, but obviously she stepped out of her shell and hit some big shots. She was where we needed her to be.”
