CHOCTAW — Choctaw star Ana Llanusa stopped, pump faked and watched the Midwest City defender fly past. Suddenly, Llanusa spun and dropped the ball to her sister Aliyah for an easy layup.
It might have been a grueling night for Ana, a Sooners signee, to score, but she made due Tuesday behind her teammates in a 55-25 win over Midwest City.
“That’s how we have to play if they’re going to do something like that,” Choctaw coach Ryan Maloney said. “When we get junked up like that, we’ve got to have other girls do that.”
Llanusa scored 15 points, but three teammates also reached double figures. Jordan Saxton and Bailey Golden scored 12 points, while Aliyah Llanusa added 11.
“All I can do is if I have an open shot take it, but most importantly get the ball, drive and kick,” Ana Llanusa said. “To get them out of it you’re going to have to have your teammates score and they’ll get right out of it, hopefully.”
Four players scored in double figures — including Ana Llanusa’s 15 — and Choctaw led by as much as 32 points.
Midwest City used a diamond-and-1 defense, which models a zone defense forming a diamond. One defender follows Ana Llanusa, who is then collapsed on by other defenders if she catches the ball.
