Khadeems grandfather? Texas basketball legend...

Had no idea that Big Daddy Lattin was Khadeem's grandfather. Did you see the movie Glory Road? Wow, what a story.

To answer your question...I think I saw him on camera one game last year.

David Lattin was the best player on the 1966 Texas Western team that played in what is still considered the most important college basketball game EVER. How fitting would it be for OU to win the title 50 years later with his grandson starting? Also, Khadeem's mom won WNBA titles with the Houston Comets, so championships do run in his family.

I would imagine that Lon Kruger has or will reach out to Mr. Lattin to give a pre-game speech at the most opportune time.

I loved that movie but man did they redo history with that movie. They didn't even win it Haskins first year and they weren't all freshmen either. The list goes on and on.

One thing they didn't even mention was that the assistant to him was Henry Iba's son.

i thought the movie was kinda dumb, typical underdog sports movie biopic...but the soundtrack is great.

In a couple of the articles dating back to his recruitment, I seem to recall statements being made to the effect that Khadeem and Dave were "not close". I hope the whole family has their support behind him, but it may be asking a bit much to tie Big Daddy in to the program just yet.

This article indicates your information is false. Some quotes:

"They’ve watched tape together since Khadeem was in middle school, breaking down his game, with Khadeem trying to learn from his grandfather’s wisdom. David has also taken a strong interest in his grandson’s physical development."

Khadeem on his grandfather:

“He helps keep me healthy,” Khadeem said. “He’s my dietitian. He was one of my early weight trainers. He keeps himself in perfect shape and has a lot of knowledge to share.”
-Khadeem Lattin

“We talk a lot about concentration,” David said. “We’re trying to get him to rebound more right now. Even though he’s 195 pounds, that has nothing to do with rebounding. You can still rebound at 195 pounds. He had 18 [rebounds] the other night, so I was proud.”

“He helps give me a killer mentality, because he was just a complete bully,” Khadeem said. “That’s the biggest thing is that he just helped to change my mentality so I can be more of a bully like him, more of a ‘get after it’ type of player, no excuses and hard-nosed.”
-Khadeem Lattin

“What I’ve tried to explain to him is that if you’re going to have those numbers you have to be busy,” David said. “There’s no time to rest during the game. You have to be in condition, you have to be able to run and get there, you have to always be thinking in terms of how you can best help your team win, whether it’s more rebounds, more blocks, or more points -- whatever it takes to win.”
-David Lattin

“I’m excited. I talk about him all the time,” David said. “My criticisms are always because I just want to make him better, but he’s got to want to do it. I keep telling him that. He’s going to have to decide how good he wants to be. He’s got the talent -- the sky is the limit for him -- and he’s improving, so I’m excited.”
-David Lattin

In that case: GOOD!

A legendary advocate/mentor figure is an enviable luxury. Hope he's a Tommy Griffin-type fixture at the LNC. I love being this type of wrong.

He won't be a fixture because his grandfather, David, lives in Houston. Maybe occasionally...... Big Daddy averaged 29 points, 19 rebounds, and 13 blocks per game as a senior at Texas Western (UTEP). Nasty!

That is crazy. Blake Griffin playing in an era with a much faster pace averaged 23, 14 and 1 his last year at OU. Wayman in his final season averaged 25, 10 and 1. King averaged 26, 10 and 2. Adams averaged 27, 13 and 0.

About the only person I can recall that posted stats like this was Oscar Robertson. Perhaps Kareem, Walt, and maybe Magic or a couple of others regularly had triple doubles in college but I really don't recall ever hearing that.

That's a lot of blocks for Big Daddy.

I think you'll find that the 1966 Texas Western team played at a much quicker pace than the 2009 Oklahoma Sooners.

Really? That is shocking because that is pre shot clock. Just by glancing at the schedules, it appears to me OU scored more points than Texas Western but I certainly didn't add it up or try to find actual numbers on pace of play.

I'm basing my assumption on the fact that we averaged one more point per game WITH the shot clock and WITH the three-point line.
