Edmond Santa Fe coach Paul Bass wanted the ball in junior Kryslyn Jones’ hands. It didn’t matter that the 3-pointers weren’t falling.
That’s because they did at just the right time Thursday night.
Jones hit two straight 3s and delivered a crucial putback in a 3-minute span of the fourth to propel No. 4-ranked Edmond Santa Fe to a 46-37 victory over Choctaw at Western Heights High School.
“She’s a shooter and she’s been missing them,” Bass said. “She just keeps shooting. Those two at the end were huge. we just kept trying to move the ball and get it in her hands. She got there.”
The victory clinches a 10th straight berth in the state tournament for the Wolves (20-6).
But this victory took a role player’s clutch plays.
Choctaw (21-5) had taken a one-point lead with 4:58 left when Jones came loose for a 3-pointer. After another Choctaw basket, she was loose from almost the same spot to regain the lead.
She extended it to 41-37 with 1:17 left when she grabbed a rebound and as her momentum took her away from the goal she put up a soft putback from the center of the lane.
“I just knew we had to get started,” said Jones, who finished with 10 points. “I just started doing the little things.”
Edmond Santa Fe was led by Kiera Neal’s 12 points. RaVon Nero added 11.
