I can usually tell what “kind” of season we had by how I feel when it’s over. Tonight, I feel totally content. This has both a positive and negative connotation. The positive is that I think this team reached their ultimate ceiling this year. Couldn’t have asked for much more than 20 wins and second round of tourney. And they went out playing hard. They gave it all they had tonight. Played pretty smart too. Just couldn’t make shots or solve the riddle of the UVA defense (no shame in that). The negative spin is that I’m also not necessarily disappointed this season is over. I’m not lamenting missing out on the Sweet 16 or feeling any pain over the loss or the end of this senior class. This all just seems like a fitting end and for me as a fan, a perfectly satisfying one.

I won’t look back on this season with any particular fondness. There really weren’t any great moments or outstanding games. Most of our games were comfortable wins/losses. Only handful were close. Pretty much all year long we beat average to below average teams with ease and we struggled with above average to good teams. We had 2-3 games where we played REALLY, REALLY well (KU, Ole Miss) and we laid quite a few eggs as well.

The biggest black mark on the season would be the 1-9 record against the 5 teams in the conf that made the tourney. And some of those 9 losses were UGLY. My biggest criticism of this season would be that in a handful of those 9 losses we didn’t seem to compete at a very high level. Seemed content on a few occasions to take our butt-whipping without much push back. That aspect of the season was disappointing to me and the fact that we went 7-12 overall in B12 games (with yet another poor showing in conf tourney) is a negative.

The positive... well, it’s funny, but the biggest positive is the bottom line. You have process and results. Both matter to me. I wasn’t always pleased with the process part. But the results are hard to argue. 20 wins, easily into the Tournament, a blowout win in round one, a non-embarrassing showing against a #1 seed. Put that on paper before the year and I would have been thrilled. The eye test along the way may have been rough at times, but they got the job done.

The seniors (plus Freeman) gave it their all and all seem like really good dudes who represented the program with class. James really endured some ups and downs in his career. I’ll always remember his contributions as a freshmen in Anaheim in the regionals. He made some big shots in those games. Honestly, after that, I thought he was going to have a little bit more impactful career than he wound up having. But he was a solid player for us and he was a huge part of our hot start this year. Based on his size/skill I’m assuming this is going to be the end of the road for his basketball career— he was a solid Sooner. Man, I wish Odomes had better genes. That dude played his guts out every game. He was just woefully undersized for the role he played. He couldn’t shoot which is really tough when you also don’t have size and your not a PG. But he made the most out of what he did have— tons of heart from that guy. I’ll miss watching him. McNeace... you know, probably shouldn’t say much here. The injury was a tough blow for him this year. Like others I do question a little bit how much he loved playing basketball, but he also came off as a good teammate and likable guy. Most likely not a natural baller and more just a kid who sprouted late and sort of got thrust into the sport. That’s my take anyway. Didn’t wind up having much impact over his four years. I’ve heard he’s a smart kid, wish him the best. Freeman... honestly, he just isn’t a B12 player. Makes sense for him to move on. Hope he found his experience in Norman to be an enjoyable one. Had some nice moments this year in the non con. Reynolds/Calixte... it was a good fit because, let’s face it, we were desperate for bodies and they were desperate to play their final college seasons on a bigger stage. Really happy for both of them that they got to go to The Dance and experience a W there. I especially found Reynolds to be easy to root for— reminded me a bit of Odomes in that regard. Not a super shock that he was quite good in the non con and then sort of got eaten up in B12 play. He’s one of those guys that was maybe a little too good to be at Pacific, but probably not quite good enough to be in rotation for a Power 5 school. As a baseball fan I’ve seen that a lot over the years— the proverbial AAAA player. He certainly played hard and seemed like a good leader. Seems like it worked well for all parties there.

On paper some may look at OU losing five rotation players and assume the worst. But other than James, I really don’t think we are losing anything that isn’t easily replaceable in terms of on-floor production (again, I do think Odomes toughens and leadership will be missed).

Our three most gifted players on this year’s team are all back next year— I will assume all three return until we hear otherwise-/ isn’t there a rumor floating about at least one of them? Anyway, Doo, Manek, and Bienemy should all be back and will be big part of team next season. Do REALLY came on late this year. He was very tough and was probably the main reason we made a little push at the end. He’s undersized too, but he is skilled and hard-nosed. It’s sometimes hard to work the post to a guy that is probably generously 6’7, but he’s a pretty gifted scorer. He will be the lone senior in rotation next year and he will be a major factor. I’ve said many times Manek drives me crazy- and he does. My hope is that next year the team around him is more talented/dynamic and he is able to find more open space. He’s better when his confidence is up. We didn’t have a ton of guys other teams needed to guard this year and that made it tougher on him. Hoping things come easier for him next year. I love EB. He can have a GREAT career at OU. Wished he would have shot the ball more this year. I expect big things from him.

I don’t follow the minutia of recruiting quite as much as others do, so perhaps someone can chime in and clean some of this up for me. But as I see it, heading into next year...

Doo
Manek
EB

Returning guys who all project to start.

Then you add Reaves and Kuath, as guys currently in Norman who had to sit out last year.

Then the newcomers:

Harmon (freshmen)
Iwuakor (freshmen)
Hill (freshmen)
Merritt (JUCO)
Williams (JUCO)
Garang (will redshirt correct?)

So the three returnees, the two that sat out this year, and the 5 newcomers. That’s 10 guys right there and I assume our rotation will consist of those 10. I also assume Polla will be back and I suppose you could throw him in the mix as well.

Not a ton of size there. No one listed above 6’9. Also seems like an abundance of wing players. But talent is talent and it will be up to the staff to figure it out if all of these guys can play.

I’d say the #1 key is Harmon. He needs to be as-advertised and he needs to be a dynamic scorer/creator. We lacked a “wow” player this year— a guy that can make something from nothing and create offense. He needs to be that guy. I don’t know as much about Iwuakor and Hill, but I’d say one of them probably needs to be “good” right away while the other can be more developmental.

EB and Manek taking next step will also be big.

My hope is that next year we have a better/more dynamic team— even f the record isn’t that much better. I think we all knew this team was very limited in what they could accomplish. My goal next year would be to make the tournament again, but this time feel like we could really make some noise once we get there. I’d also REALLY like to get out of the B12 basement. Three years in a row in the bottom 4 is not good. We should be better than that.

For me this season was a solid B. I have some complaints, but they are also offset by being impressed by other things. Honestly, it was kind of a boring year and not one I’m entirely upset is over. But I do appreciate that the players probably maxed out their talents and over the last 3-4 weeks of the year they really played their hearts out and saved the season from derailing.

I’m sure it’s tough for the guys. None of the guys leaving are likely to have pro playing careers. This was it for them. And I’m sure that is painful to realize it’s over. I feel for them. As a proud Sooner, I hope they enjoyed their time in Norman and take pride in being part of the program/school. In a year that looked VERY shaky on paper before it started, they outdid most expectations and got to experience a win in the tourney. That’s cool and I hope lifelong memories for them.

As a fan, I’ll be ready for a team next year that hopefully has some “next level” talent. I think it’s a big year for Lon.

As the season came to a close I too had more of a feeling of contentment than anguish. This team had two really bad home losses but unlike last year when the team quit on the season this team reached down and pushed through to make the tournament. Included in that an awesome showing against Mississippi. Already looking forward to next year and seeing what the new guys bring to the table and hoping our returning guys grow even more.

Always appreciate your comments, OUSKINS.

I'm more content with this season than last. This season, in a vacuum, was a clear-cut success. My only issue is the things that led up to this season. We should have had more talent, and this season should not be the pinnacle of a 3 year run.

I felt a little bit of fondness for this team tonight. UVA is a far more talented, but we had 6 guys that looked like they belonged out there (starting 5 plus Reynolds), which is saying a lot for this team considering the overall talent gap. They played hard, and had they had more depth, I believe they would have made UVA sweat it out to the end. If we'd had the freshman versions of CJ and Doo to bring off the bench, this game could have looked a lot different.

Postseason losses suck. This one sucked less than most.

there is close to a 0% chance tha james is done with basketball ..

and we really are lacking in wings for next season we have 5 wings for 3 spots .. and is not even a 2 deep

Good write-up. Don't forget we also had wins over Florida and Wofford that wound up being good tournament teams. I never thought we would have played one more game than Iowa State and K-State. Our season ended well compared to those teams that flopped.

I'm not sure what LK will do with Harmon and Bienemy.

Harmon at point guard pushes JB to the wing and at this point, he doesn't shoot it well enough to be a wing. I'm sure he'll work on his shooting but it'll be a question mark going in.

I hope Harmon can play downhill, JB is a good decision maker but he struggles to beat defenders off the dribble. The ability to penetrate is key at that position.

I believe Harmon will be the starting PG day 1. JB will be the backup PG and play the 2 guard as well. He can shoot the ball, that’s just not what he’s been asked to do this year.

I don’t know who the heck EB is? Can he rebound?

EB was a good running back for Colorado and now oc for the Kansas City Chiefs. Rebounding might be tough since he's only about 5'6 but probably has one year of eligibility left for basketball. I guess you could say he's a one and done.

Congrats on the season. Here's our postgame coverage...

OU in NCAA 2019: Notebook: Final farewells to James, McNeace and Odomes

The careers of Christian James, Jamuni McNeace and Rashard Odomes came to an end in Sunday’s 63-51 loss to Virginia in an NCAA Tournament second-round game.

It’s been a special ride for the three, who began as important role players on the Sooners’ 2016 Final Four team and have provided an important bridge to the future.

“We’ve been here so long together,” McNeace said. “Even the new guys, they came in here and bonded so well with us. Christian, Ro, Matt (Freeman), we’ve all been here four years together. It’s going to be hard not seeing them every day and not able to play with them on the court.”

Freeman, a junior, took part in OU’s senior day activities this season. After Sunday’s game, he said he still hasn’t decided on his future.

OU in NCAA 2019: Oklahoma-Virginia storylines and matchups that mattered

Virginia’s defense was as good as advertised on Sunday night. The Cavaliers simply never allowed Oklahoma’s offense to get comfortable. An 18-2 run during the first half — highlighted more by Virginia’s ability to use defense to build offense — put the game out of reach for the Sooners.

Oklahoma shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field. How up-and-down was the weekend for OU? The Sooners scored 95 points against Ole Miss (including 50 in the first half) and only managed 52 against Virginia.

OU in NCAA 2019: Sooners' run ends in second round against top-seeded Virginia

“We competed hard all year,” said grad transfer Miles Reynolds, struggling mightily with emotions after playing his final game at Oklahoma. “We came up short tonight, but that’s OK because we fought from tip to buzzer. We’re always going to live with ourselves when we compete like that.”

...

“We went out there and fought,” OU senior Christian James said. “That’s a great team, a credit to them. They slowed the pace down and they ran their sets. They executed.

“We lost to a good team. We gave it all we’ve got.”

“They did a good job of speeding us up,” James said. “They took us out of our rhythm. We missed some open shots — shots we usually make and that we made on Friday. They dictated from the jump and it hurt us late in the game.”

...

“Our guys fought like crazy throughout the year,” OU coach Lon Kruger said. “Opportunity to qualify for the tournament and get a good win on Friday and didn’t get the result we wanted tonight, but proud of them. These guys have represented well, and happy for them.”

Finally, here's photos from last night's game.

Once again, congrats on the season and thank you for letting me partake in the discussion here.

Geeze, showing my age... yes I am mistakenly referring to “JB” as “EB” because when I hear “Bienemy” I think “Eric.”

Lol...sorry was thinking of Jamal's uncle Eric.

Great post and I agree with almost everything you said.

It's a shame we lost a few games we should have won because had we won those maybe we are a 7 instead of a 9. That also probably means we open with a tougher matchup than was Ole Miss so that's a 2 sided coin. Hard to say.

I think in the end the 1-9 record vs Big 12 tourney teams is what's hard for me to swallow. That is not good no matter how you slice it.

Great post.

Although I will disagree about CJ being done with basketball. If Cade Davis can carve out a basketball career in Europe (still playing abroad as far as I know), then James can absolutely do the same if he so desires, and at a higher level.

There were three things that hurt the team.

1) A senior class that wasn't what most seniors are. Consistent! James had a great pre-conference performance but was off and on in the second half of the season. Odomes was good against some teams. Not so good against others. McNeace never reached the ceiling that was often predicted for him. At best though he was not a strong presence in the middle. The two transfers were good early but faded pretty bad. Reynolds was pretty good against Virginia.

2) Interior defense. Showed up most against Kansas. We lost when their big man was playing and won pretty big when he was out. McNeace was more an offensive player. Got some blocks on D but gave up a lot of easy putbacks when he missed the ball. Injury hurt but even not injured would still probably not been a strong defensive player. Doolittle did his best but last night showed how disadvantaged he was against premium competition.

3) Lack of depth and of a strong point guard. Having said that I really like Bieniemy. But he lacks the confidence to be a scoring threat now even though I think he will be a good scorer in his career. I don't think he realizes how good he is and can be. Some of his moves to the basket left me with a "wow" feeling but he didn't do it enough and I don't remember him kicking off much. I'm very glad he is coming back. We looked to have depth early on but it disolved as the season progressed and was a major factor in our loss to Virginia.

With those issues I am pretty satisfied with the season. Someday I hope to see us beat K-State really bad to put an end to the seemingly number that Weber has on Kruger. It is like he found an old Kruger playbook at Illinois and has been beating us to a pulp with what he learned.

Some posters will disagree but I felt Manek made good progress this year but there is still some upside. I think many assume that because he is tall that he can't play defense and he does get buried deep sometimes and they score over him. But almost everyone gives up points when they get buried deep. I watch him very close on defense and he usually does a very good job even against smaller quicker players. He will be a key for us next year. Hopefully he will also provide good leadership to the young guys coming in.

Doolittle may have yet another adjustment. Probably will move to the 4 but could be a high post threat. Very few defensive fours will be able to stop him from driving on them and he was mostly an outside shooter in high school and has a nice shot from the high post. He will be key and seems to have leadership qualities.

We always overhype the newcomers but I have hopes that they will do a nice job of filling in and providing us some quality depth which we sorely lacked this year. Reeves has often been described as the best player we have now. I believe Harmon was a 5* before comitting to OU and will be an impact player. I am also impressed with the videos I have seen of others. Garang intriguing.

I believe we will be quite a bit better next year but we are dealing with young people and you are never sure how motivated they will be to improve themselves. Also a lot will depend on newcomers which is always a little uncertain. But with Doolittle, Manek, Bieniemy and Reeves we will have a great nucleus. The Big 12 schools have done a great job of upgrading coaching in recent years and everyone will be tough. Even Scott Drew seems to have upgraded his coaching ability.

With how many leagues and divisions and tiers there are overseas now, you're probably right. If CJ wants to keep playing, he probably can. I guess for me, I'm always thinking of it on a high-impact level. Start with NBA, then go to G-League/fringe NBA, then move to high-level Europe with a chance to make big money and/or work way to NBA. If they don't fall in any of those categories I generally dismiss it as "playing career is over" but of course that may not technically be the case.

Waaaaaaaaay worse players than Christian James played professional in other countries.

This season definitely had it's ups and downs but it's about what I expected. No matter what, I'll still continue to support my team and my dad and I will renew our season tickets for the 24th year in a row

There were three things that hurt the team.

I'd argue the #1 thing that hurt them is guard talent.

No offense, but Odomes has no business being a starter in the Big 12. He just doesn't have the offense. Outside of James (who was 4 of 13 from the floor), our other 4 guards scored a grand total of 14 points. Our two starting guards scored 9.

I know UVA is a really good defensive team, but that was the story of season. Our guards, when you compare them to other top 25-ish type teams, are so far behind in offensive talent (and I'll add coaching in there), that it's not even funny. How can Houston have 3-4 guard that our better than all but maybe 1 of ours? Guards win basketball games, and we better improve there in a hurry if we want to compete in the Big 12. Gone are the days of having a good offense with a guy like Odomes on the floor. It's just too tough. Gotta have guys that can score it in a variety of ways. Guys that are quick. Quickness plays.
