Flash back Friday

I'm a poor basketball guru but it seems to me that Sherri has relied on movement and cuts to get players open and not screens.

I agree after having Paris for 4 years feeding her the ball down low, and then Aaryen for 4 years who could create her own looks to score, I can see why Sherri wouldn't relie on a lot of screens. I think a player like Little could be our go to scorer next season, but she'll need ball screens to get more open looks...

I think each of our players has different needs.

Peyton: I don't think a screen helps her so much, especially if she has to drive around it. She is best as a catch and shoot player. A great number of her threes are on passes out from the baseline or from the post. Sometimes, they come off of feeds in the corner as someone drives the lane. Often, her best shots come from inbound plays where she is set. If she has to move, the lane needs to be open, like on a break or secondary break. She doesn't seem to make her own shot by dribbling, even if only to get around a screen. Let someone else drive, and let her go to one of her shooting spots.

Gioya: is a bit like Peyton on threes. She doesn't hit them off the dribble. She hits them as a spot shooter. When she dribbles, it is usually best if she gets to the free throw line and shoots from there. She loses it in traffic, and she doesn't always get the call when she penetrates.

Derica: is maybe our best spot shooter for threes right now. Sometimes, she surprises with a fast break drive. But, her forte is not driving for a two. She does seem to be getting better with threes, but is streaky. It seems that she can hit five or zero. But, she is a spot shooter.

Maddie: last year was the first year in which she didn't hit threes. Her stroke is good, but she seems to lack confidence at times. She is a lot better when she doesn't have time to think. She also seemed to be better when well-guarded on twos. She has to do it rather than think it. I don't see that a screen helps her, except to drive.

I think Maddie is the only one of our starters who could benefit from screens, and that isn't for shooting. She spots up well, when she just reacts. A small screen can give her a lane, and she is dangerous if she gets a lane. I don't know how often she found the lanes blocked because nobody was moving.
