It was brought to this board's attention several weeks ago that Rob Goff was rumored to be in serious potential academic trouble up at Hutch. I recently spoke with a basketball contact of mine and he informed me that Goff indeed was having issues in the classroom and despite a recent effort to try and right the situation, "still has a big hole to get out of".

Hope he can make it here. :(

Sam, Will, or Greg:

Could you guys try and get an update from Rob?

If Goff's own words are worth anything he'll be here in June:

However, within the last few weeks and months questions surrounding Goff's academic qualifications came to the forefront.

"No sir. Everything is still a full go and I'm 100 percent in. I hope to get to Norman by early June."

If you are struggling to make your grades at a JC,that tells me you are three things Lazy, just don't give a rats arse,or plain stupid..Any of those would equate to not being a solid player at OU..Go Sooners!!!!!

I was afraid the person who told me about Goffs academics had good info.

If he makes it, I'm not expecting him to he the next Harvey Grant or Bryan Sallier. However, no reason why he can't be a Jabahri Brown type player if he is athletic as some claim.

If he doesn't make it, that will be a blow because we need somebody athletic with some hops and wingspan to help out inside.

Just me BUT I am willing to bet Lon has checked out Goff's academic status has made a dtermination as to the likelihod of Goff making it to OU.I would lso specualte that he has a backup plan in mind.If he is thinking Goff is not going to make it,he will try to bring in TWO post players.Personally I think he is of the opinion Goff will make it since he is talking about trying to sign one post and one point.

I would add that difficulty in juco does not preclude a person from succeeding at OU.I would point to torrance Marshall as an example. There are numerous stories that Marshall was not terribly academic minded(to put it politely) and yet he was able to stay eligible for two years at OU thanks largely to the extensive academic support system. Academic issues are nothing new in bigtime sports.I recall one year at OU Tubbs had 5 players academically ineligible in one season.I don't recall all involved but Mike Harris,Damon Patterson, and I think Smokey McCovery were among them..Let's face it,these guys are mostly athlete-students rather than student-athletes.

The 5 players weren't ineligible from a grades perspective. If I remember correctly, they were ruled ineligible because Dr Tom Hill changed the policy regarding athlete eligibility regarding progress toward a degree. Their gpa was fine, but they weren't taking classes that would help them to graduate.

At least that's how I remember it, but maybe I'm wrong.

Goff didn't affect my grades but I did skip english class a lot to play Basketball at Huff&Puff

Yes, Dr. Tom Hill screwed the BBall team. I recall he made them take legit majors instead of majoring in PE or being undeclared (like most programs were doing) and increased their course load and difficulty or ran them off. If it wasn't for Hill, OU BB would have keep chugging along in the elite class with Billy Tubbs.

Let's see, if not for "Doctor" Tom Hill here's your 1991 starting lineup.

PG - Smokey McCovery
SG - Brent Price
SF - Damon Patterson
PF - Jeff Webster
C - Jackie Jones

Good luck, Big 8 Conference. You were going to need it. "Doctor" Tom Hill is the biggest villain this program has known in the last 30 years other than Danny Manning.

Off the bench, you had Terrence Mullins, Terry Evans, Kermit Holmes, and Bryan Sallier.

That team would have been stacked.

That bench might have won the Big 8 as starters.

As I think about it, Sallier would have started at Center and Jackie Jones would have been the PF, which places Webster coming off the bench.

How good is a team when they have a PARADE All-American coming off the bench?

You really think Webster doesn't start? He averaged 18 PPG in '91. Dude could fill it up!

I'm not saying he didn't deserve to start, but that was his redshirt frosh year. I think more than anything that Jones wasn't a center. Maybe Webster plays Center and Jones at PF, but Sallier was a bull inside and he was really physical. Not to mention he could score, although his game was much better the next season.

In the end, it wouldn't have mattered who started because all of them would have played significant minutes.

Just think about being able to bring a Webster, Sallier, Mullins, Evans, Holmes, or whoever else, off the bench. Wow!

If you can't make it in JUCO, you're going to a helluva time trying to stay afloat at OU.
