It's been over ten years since Kelvin Sampson left OU. Where does time go?
Houston beat Tubby Smith's Memphis team on the road today to improve to 20-8 overall and 11-5 in the American. They need some serious help and a couple more big wins to make the tournament, but they have a couple of great guards (both transfers of course), so anything is possible in their conference tournament.
It's good to see Coach Sampson back in college basketball and winning 20+ games a year again. Houston has as good of a team the last two years as they've had in decades. Someone asked him on twitter earlier this year what his favorite non-NCAA tournament win has been as a coach. He said it was the last game in the old GIA when we came back from double digits to beat OSU. That brought back some great memories!
Our win over Kansas State yesterday also reminded me of when we beat Kansas State in 2005 with Lavender's acrobatic buzzer beater after going the length of the floor in 4 seconds. Feels like just yesterday in so many ways.
Thanks to Lon, we have a great program and an incredibly bright future. It's a lot more fun to look back at the past and the Sampson era when you have a Hall of Famer on your sideline. How fortunate our program has been! I am happy to see our program thriving and Sampson back on the sidelines. FYI - Kellen and his wife are expecting, so Kelvin will be a granddad.
