Interesting quotes from Capel

Prove otherwise. Thanks in advance.

So, you state:

I am quite sure the quote was made well before the article was published, probably a few hours before.

I ask you to prove it since you say "probably a few hours before" and you tell me to prove otherwise? :ez-laugh:

Wow.

Like I said, I initiated the thread after the post-game quotes were linked on this board. Had the newspaper articles been linked after the game when I was online, I probably wouldn't have started this thread.

Norm -- I've just lost a lot of respect for you. I thought you were better than that.

This is quite possibly one of the most idiotic threads to ever appear on this site.

It certainly has to rank in the top 3.

The super moderator's astute quote of "it was probably posted 2 hours after the game was over but I can't prove it" certainly helped push it into the top 3. Without that push, it would have remained with all the other great threads in ouhoops.com lore.

Please show my quote where I said anything about 2 hours.

Lol this is silly...soonernorm you did not say 2 hours you said a few hours which is atleast 2

He has said that he has done a bad job BEFORE this as well.

Booger, what is the outcome you want from this season? Jeff to be fired? It isn't going to happen. Once you embrace the reality that Jeff Capel being fired isn't going to happen, then maybe then you'll be able to see why some of us feel like you are beating a dead horse.

I am beating a dead horse and it's just about time to bury the horse.

I don't necessarily want Jeff to be fired, but I don't think he's competent to be the head coach at OU. I think in 5-10 years he could be but does anybody want to wait that long?

I think I'm just a bit miffed that Joe Castiglione thought so little of the basketball program that he hired an "up and comer" on the cheap, instead of paying an established coach what KS was making or a little more.

As an OU basketball fan, I hope he can get it figured out and then turn around the basketball program, but when you have a season such as this one with very few, if any, positives to take from the season it's hard to think he can (get it figured out).

So much talent and so little results is very disheartening.

That's all I'm saying.

Well, in a non-argumentative way, let's see if I can respond.

1. Acknowleging that Jeff having the best player in the country last season helped tremendously, he was still competent enough to have coached that team up to being (IMHO) the second best team in the country. To me, if he were that incompetent, Jeff would have found a way to screw things up. Moreover, the guy with the best team in the country that season is having the same issues with his team this year after losing two of the top five players in the country. I don't think a bad season is based solely on being competent.

2. While money may have been an issue, I think that both Joe Castiglione and David Boren really, really, really liked Jeff Capel. In fact, my recollection was that Jeff was said by both of them to have had many of the same characterstics as Bob did when he interviewed. I think about the state of the program at that time, and it was not a pretty picture to some of the higher end guys that "may" have been interested in the job. Ultimately, I did not hear of any big names clamoring for the OU job...and the names that were surfacing were not that appealing (IMHO). David Boren is one of the best University presidents in the country, and Joe Castiglione is widely regarded as one of (if not the) best athletic director in the country. I'm trusting in their decision for a while longer...they have earned that trust.

3. I think that this season was a damned if you do, damned if you don't from the jump. And I also think that with more experience, Jeff would have seen the bad coming and maybe rectified it sooner. On this team we had three guys eyeing the NBA, two guys in the middle of thier g/f's pregnancies, and another two guys that exhibited poor character at the worst moment possible. Clearly, the main cause of this teams poor play was that they suffered from distractions...we saw a little bit of that last season as well when we were not looking good as people thought. Personally, I am betting that what Capel is taking away from this season is that team building = focus = on the court wins. Team building starts in the summer and with his S&C staff, and I agree with some other folks that Yo Yo needs to learn from this season as well. If you are going to recruit high-end one and done type players, you have to get the team mentality instilled in them [I'll give it up to Calipari, he seems to have that part of things figured out].

4. Most importantly to me, Jeff has handled this crappy season with a degree of class than may not satisfy the fans or the media, but does satisfy the long-term standing of the University of Oklahoma Men's Basketball program. I think that he is a GOOD guy that represents the University well. Next season is a big one for him, and I for one think that he is due to have some good things happen for him. Even you admit that he might be great in 5-10 years; but what if he was "pretty good" all along, and based on the lessons he learned and became "great" 2 years from now? That is what I worry about, that the guy pulls it all together and becuase we were not patient he goes on to great success somewhere else.

wow...b/c that has never worked before. Stoops, coale, etc were already established coaches

Man, that just got me thinking....this time a year ago, the FB team had just played for a national championship, the MBB team was in the top 5 and the women's basketball team was in the top 5 with both getting ready to make some nice runs in thier respective tournaments. All three are Joe C. and David Boren hires...I'm even more committed to giving those guys the benefit of the doubt.

Not to add national players of the year in all three sports [I recall CP recieving some of those honors]. What a year.

Coale is a different discussion altogether. If you knew much about the womens basketball program you wouldn't mention her name because she was only hired because NOBODY wanted that job since Donnie Duncan had previously attempted to close it down.

No question about it, Sherrie has been a great hire but nobody other than the woman who hired her (the women's AD at the time; can't remember her name) thought any coach worth a dang would (a) want the job and (b) make chicken salad out of chicken crap, which is exactly what Sherri has done and then some.

Bob wasn't an established coach, true, but he was the top assistant coach in football and truthfully, not many proven head coaches were getting in line for the OU job for a number of reasons. Joe C definitely hit a homerun with that hire. I'll also say Bob has proven he was ready for a HC job at a big program, Jeff on the other hand has not (yet). I hope he does...believe me, I truly (and sincerely) hope he does.

I hope you are right.

I agree Joe and Boren are 2 of the best in the business, but Joe has never really given the basketball program his full attention. It seems to me, from 350 miles away that this hire was just another indicator of that. However, I'm sure it is getting his attention now because I'm betting some donor's are complaining, but maybe not.

He just went 30-6 last season and took the program to an Elite Eight. The year before he took OU to the NCAA Tournament, and he had also taken a team to the NCAA Tournament before he ever got to Norman [and I believe before he was 30 years old]. Jeff just turned what 34 or 35? Dude, his resume is outstanding for just about anybody out there.
