Brenda Friese must be a great recruiter.

More than likely, she has at least one GREAT recruiter as an assistant and then she closes the deal. Student-athletes make choices for a variety of reasons. A GREAT recruiter will begin by doing their research and remain transparent (honest about the reality of expectations as a COLLEGIATE student-athlete) with integrity. NC, FF, etc is a bonus but all coaches started without any under their belt. The key is what I call the "Geno Factor"....develop a great coaching staff, don't fix what ain't broke, COACH and DEVELOP, each assistant knows their role, frank honesty and win win win because winners recognize winners. The players will recruit for you, so winners keep coming. You don't get them all (but neither do you want them all), but you get what you need to keep winning.

I think one key is to identify at least 4 players for whichever position you are recruiting for. You develop relationships with each and recruit all 4 hard. To put all of your eggs in one basket is not smart.

I do know that Brenda Friese was in Texas a few weeks ago so I know she does some of her own evaluations/recruiting.

I should have added- There are some players who are so good you have to offer them even if their position was not one you were worried about as a coach. If you can recruit over someone and upgrade the position, that is how you improve the program.

All that you stated is correct and recruiting characteristics of a great coaching staff; especially an assistant coach. A great assistant will do the research, initiate the contact as early as possible with a request for information and follow, follow, follow. The assistant will know when to tell the head coach to "make an appearance". The better the player, the earlier the appearance by the HEAD coach. Appearance means NCAA sanctioned events, and if you're talking about the cream of the crop...show up at AAU nationals when you hear about a 7th or 8th grader. Players and parents know who is watching. They are watching coaches just like coaches are watching them. They look to see how well coaches are recruiting...well informed and intelligent players and parents do.
