It gets mentioned a lot by commentators and at times (especially the last two years) the Sooners have been able to switch 1-5 against certain teams.

I can't really recall what Sampson and Capel generally did regarding switching between the guards and if they ever switched 1-5. Anyone recall?

We probably did under Capel because we ran about every defense known to man with him.

From what I remember the Sampson teams didn't switch this much. His players were far more likely to fight through screens and trust in help defense to give them time to recover. Both systems work wonderfully if you have the right athletes and mentality.

Sampson didn't switch much, and that is my preference, but it's hard to argue with the D we've played this year.

Sampson didn't switch much just like Sutton elder taught up north. Only difference was Eddie coached his guys to use their inside hand to hold the offensive guys jersey or arm as they went through the screen to slow them down. If you remember watching his teams play, their opponents were constantly having to tuck the jerseys back in.

CLK theory on switching is it's harder to lose guys on pick and roll and you essentially play what amounts to a match-up zone. Like said earlier, both can be equally effective. I prefer Sampson/Sutton too but you really have to lock in each possession to play it correctly. That's hard to do for 40 minutes.

Yes. The defense switched from sucking to be really good

.

That is an interesting take. I don't recall OU having any defensive philosophy under Capel. Even his two good seasons I recall no identity. Perhaps that is because Capel was constantly switching defenses.

I like the switching because we do it the right way and we have the players to do it. It is the right thing for our team and it brings a team focus to defense in the same way as offense. It's actually fun to watch.

The first team I recall seeing that did this well was Davidson when they had Stephen Curry. He was all of their offense but they also gave trouble to teams with their switching defense.
