NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week today after performances against Iowa State and Nebraska last week.

Against the Cyclones and Cornhuskers, the 5-11, 203-pound Mason-Griffin averaged 23.5 points and 5.0 assists while shooting .533 from the field (16-for-30), .467 from 3-point range (7-for-15) and .889 from the free throw line (8-for-9).

The point guard scored 38 points in an 89-84 home win over Iowa State on Wednesday, the most by a Big 12 player this year. His 38 points were the most by an OU freshman since 1983 (Wayman Tisdale), the most ever by an OU freshman guard, tied for the most ever by an OU point guard and tied for the fifth most by a freshman in Big 12 history.

Mason-Griffin was 13-for-21 from the field against the Cyclones, knocked down a career-high five 3-pointers on 10 attempts and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line to help OU improve to 10-0 at home. He also handed out six assists while playing the entire game.

At Nebraska, Mason-Griffin contributed nine points (with the help of 2-for-5 3-point shooting) and four assists in a 63-46 loss.

On the season, Mason-Griffin is averaging 12.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting .446 from 3-point distance. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in assists, second in 3-point field goal percentage and seventh in 3-pointers per game.

In conference play, the Houston, Texas, native is averaging a team-high 17.4 points per game (most among league freshmen), is shooting .489 from behind the arc and ranks second in the league with his 3.1 treys per game. Mason-Griffin has made at least two 3-pointers in 14 of OU's last 16 outings.

No freshman in OU history has shot better from 3-point range for an entire season than Mason-Griffin's current .446 mark.

Kansas' Cole Aldrich was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 15.0 points and 13.5 rebounds in wins over Missouri and Kansas State.

The Sooners' next game is Saturday against Texas at 3 p.m. CT in Norman. The OU Athletics Department will honor the late Wayman Tisdale and his family that day. Souvenir Tisdale patches will be given to the first 2,000 fans in attendance, a pre-game concert from 1:30 to 2:15 will feature members of Tisdale's band, and in-game video messages from various athletes and musicians will reflect on Tisdale's life. Also, a special preview of the upcoming documentary "The Wayman Tisdale Story" will be shown at halftime.
