Back from Lloyd Noble with some random thoughts.
BILLY BALL IS BACK!
I had heard something from Sherri earlier about trying to get a shot in the first 6 seconds of the game, and we seemed really dedicated to that, particularly in the first half. The rest was all motion offense. I don't think we ran any set plays other than inbounds plays.
Unfortunately, we also looked a lot like some of Billy's early teams on defense, too. A dribble drive by SWOS in the first quarter guaranteed a wide open 3 pointer.
It's pretty easy to get gassed going up and down in a quarter with 5 minutes to play before a break - that will take some getting used to.
We have plenty of depth at center! From KK to Vivi to EJ, we have solid play all around. EJ was particularly good for a freshman.
Maddie and Shaya were the rotation at the 4. Shaya was in all the right places, but really didn't do much with it.
It just wasn't Derrica's night; ofer on 3-pointers, most of which were wide open. And too slow tonight to guard any of the SW players.
L. Williams really wants that other starting position. I thought she was the most dynamic player on the floor tonight, though still not as disciplined as she needs to be, particularly on defense.
Not sure that our All-Conference point guard was the best point on the floor tonight. TT was fabulous on both ends of the floor. Great 1-2 punch at the point position.
Penzo was also very solid. Not quite as aggressive on offense as some, but a difference maker on both ends of the court. Had some no-look passes that took me back to 2002.
Got back to the car in time to catch Coach say that between now and the first real game, they'll be concentrating on defense. Good call!
