Back from Lloyd Noble with some random thoughts.

BILLY BALL IS BACK!

I had heard something from Sherri earlier about trying to get a shot in the first 6 seconds of the game, and we seemed really dedicated to that, particularly in the first half. The rest was all motion offense. I don't think we ran any set plays other than inbounds plays.

Unfortunately, we also looked a lot like some of Billy's early teams on defense, too. A dribble drive by SWOS in the first quarter guaranteed a wide open 3 pointer.

It's pretty easy to get gassed going up and down in a quarter with 5 minutes to play before a break - that will take some getting used to.

We have plenty of depth at center! From KK to Vivi to EJ, we have solid play all around. EJ was particularly good for a freshman.

Maddie and Shaya were the rotation at the 4. Shaya was in all the right places, but really didn't do much with it.

It just wasn't Derrica's night; ofer on 3-pointers, most of which were wide open. And too slow tonight to guard any of the SW players.

L. Williams really wants that other starting position. I thought she was the most dynamic player on the floor tonight, though still not as disciplined as she needs to be, particularly on defense.

Not sure that our All-Conference point guard was the best point on the floor tonight. TT was fabulous on both ends of the floor. Great 1-2 punch at the point position.

Penzo was also very solid. Not quite as aggressive on offense as some, but a difference maker on both ends of the court. Had some no-look passes that took me back to 2002.

Got back to the car in time to catch Coach say that between now and the first real game, they'll be concentrating on defense. Good call!

TT needs to be told in no uncertain terms NOT to try to shoot when she in under the basket among the trees. It is absurdly easy to block her shot.
I dont think we have anybody as quick or as fast as the two guards for Southwestern. And our dribble penetration defense (as usual) needs shoring up as well as corner post up defense.

Could it be that Sherri had instructed them not to foul? We had several try to drive into the lane that put themselves in a bind. They can't shoot over anyone. Maddie can. Penzo seems to know when to pull up and dish although she made one mistake on that.

Wow, the freshman post is a stud. Her and Vive are real good with a high ceiling. Run run run last night, they put up 99 shots, improve on percentage and their scores will be very high. The defense was not great, but that will improve. Now, please someone tell me why Kelloge and Wyatt are ever on the floore, they don't play defense and neither one of them can hit basket. Kelloge is fast, tall, but for the life of me she must not get any coaching. I think she shot four threes and didn't hit the rim on most of them. Is it just me?

Tempo and energy should be high for both Coach Coale and Coach Kruger's' teams this year. Let's get the LNC rockin!

Not only can Kellogg not make shots, her form is as bad as I've seen in a long time. Not sure who has been giving her shooting tips but it isn't working.

Kellogg made a lot of her points from 3 point range in high school. She has never got it going with OU. She seems pretty athletic for her height but just seems lost out there. She did seem to me to cover pretty well on D.

I think Kellogg was about 35% in high school. I watched her make a couple in the finals of an AAU tournament (Iowa vs Miami) against a team that included Kai James and Moncrief. She made a three to put Iowa ahead with about two minutes left. So, they took her out, and Miami won.

She seems uncertain in college. But, she only played a few minutes due to some injuries, and she hasn't really spent much time on court. If she gets some time, we may see that she can shoot. She hits free throws as I remember. Sherri seemed to be satisfied with how she played, except for the misses.
