The No. 1 Westmoore girls had their tournament title hopes and five-game winning streak halted in a 69-59 loss to Class 4A No. 3 Newcastle in the final of the Newcastle tournament Saturday.

The Racers (15-2), who defeated Class 4A No. 2 Chickasha 49-43 in their semifinal Friday, used strong perimeter shooting to snatch away the victory with a 21-12 fourth quarter edge. The Racers also were able to hold Westmoore’s leading scorer Jessi Murcer, who averages more than 20 points per game, to just 16.

“It was a close ballgame,” Andrea Guziec said. “We had a run, they’d have a run. They just had the late run … They made their free throws. We just didn’t score enough on the other end.”

WM 18 15 14 12—59
NC 12 17 15 21—65
Westmoore: J. Murcer 16, Gomez 11, Outon 11, Richardson 10, Chastain 8, Mahan 3.
Newcastle: Mayo 14, Endsley 13, Weatherly 12, Nelms 9, Sylvester 8, Cerny 6, North 3.

Westmoore plays a tough fullcourt press that generates a lot of turnovers. They are very well coached. Teams that play smart and play tough defense will win a lot of games. Plus, Murcer and Gomez are pretty difficult to guard. Will they win it all? Don't know but, they are contenders.

I haven't seen them play, but from every stat line I read they rely on Murcer and Gomez for 90% of their scoring. Not sure how far this is going to go during playoffs.

The night I attended, it was a very competitive game between Sapulpa and Westmoore until Chelsea just took over.

I have no Chamionship game set in mind. 6A is an open race at this point. But, if I could choose a final 4 right now it would be.

Sapulpa
Edmond Santa Fe
Choctaw
Muskogee

BA is two time defending champ and Owasso beat Sapulpa. Along with Muskogee, those four Frontier Conference teams could be the final four. Owasso beat Santa Fe earlier also. Girls bball in the Frontier Conference is the best in the state. Lack of competition could end up hurting west side teams.

My guess is Choctaw & Sapulpa....There is still a lot ball to be played. And I agree there are a lot of really strong teams in 6A. Any of the top 10 you could make a "logical" arguement for being a contender.

There is more talent in 6A this year than I can ever remember. I can think of about 20 girls in the top 10 in 6A that have D1 talent. Probably half or more are small D1 players but that is still a large number.

As long as Muskogee has Wilson, Jada Ford, and Trina Mims, you certainly cannot overlook them.
