OCU tonight

Yes, they are a very good NAIA team and expected to be very good this year.

They were beat by 30 by Texas A&M but played Arkansas a lot more competitively.

Obviously, OU should win the game, but I think OU needs to play well to blow them out. I think this will be a very good early test. Last year's exhibition win was hardly worth playing because it was such an enormous mismatch. This will actually allow us to grow and learn something.

I will say that if OU struggles to win, it will not be a good sign. We need to get the season off to a decent start and win games for our confidence sake.

I am excited to see how the team has progressed and developed since a year ago.

45-31 at half. 13 for Llanusa and 11 for Robertson. Really good first quarter as we forced 11 turnovers and only committed 1. We were sloppier in Q2 and got in some minor foul trouble limiting minutes for Llanusa and Madi Williams.

88-68 final. Ana 27 and Robertson with 20. Gregory looked nervous and struggled on offense until she got an open 3 in rhythm. She was better after hitting that shot and ended with 8. Lemons started at PG and just played as a facilitator. Madi Williams scored 13. Overall a solid effort over a better than normal exhibition opponent.

By the way Liz Scott did not play...I assume she still isn’t cleared for full speed play.

Well, can't say I'm really surprised by how little things have changed, but I am very disappointed. one game in is early to say, but I have a feeling there won't be a whole lot of big change from last season. There's Ana, then occasionally Madi, then everyone else...huge weakness down low again this season, from what I saw. Williston showed a little potential but that was against NAIA girls, not big DI gals. Hopefully not another long season, fingers crossed!!

Step back from the ledge...

When our top six were playing, we were good. Some of the turnovers were due to reserves trying to find their place, like Gregory. Some didn't know how to pass to each other.

Pleased with an improved defense. Still don''t know how we'll defend the tall post. But, I got the feeling that we might give trouble with quickness.

I was pleased to see some improvement from Tatum to go with solid play from Ana, Madi, and Taylor. There is hope for life in Aspen. Bloom had no clue for a minute. Then, she made a couple of good plays. Murcer made some mistakes, but had some positives. Don't know what to say about Gabby yet. Lemon played a role well. Need more.

Better than I had anticipated.

The Good:

Ana, Taylor, and Madi are really good basketball players. All three look to be improved from a year ago. Ana just brings an enormous amount of energy and leadership. It is abundantly clear she's embraced her role as a leader, and she was simply outstanding at times.

Taylor is what we all expect. She is simply a fantastic shooter. One of the best I've ever seen. While she is limited, she's going to shoot us into the win column a lot in her career.

Madi still has a long way to go from reaching her potential, but we are really, really going to need her rebounding, athleticism, and grit this year because of what we lack in the post.

The defense was infinitely better *at times* than a year ago (Oklahoma City shot 36%). However, the minute the reserves come into the game, we regress substantially on the defensive side of the ball. I really thought we showed enormous improvement with our help and rotations, and then it's like that would completely disappear at times and it was like I was watching last year all over again. In all honesty, it might be as simple as - when Ana was on the floor, we had energy and defended. When she was not on the floor, we lacked energy and gave up a lot of wide open looks.

Gabbi Gregory didn't play well, but I'll just say it - she's going to be a star. You can see it in her body language. Great players have great body language. She also has a great looking shot, and you think she's going to score when the ball leaves her hands. Also, 6 rebounds! We need those.

Williston showed some flashes. If she continues to develop, I think she could be a decent player.

The Bad

Rebounding. Oh my word. We outrebounded Oklahoma City by 2. That's just hard to fathom for me. Oklahoma City had 13 offensive rebounds!! This is going to kill us this year if we can't figure out how to scrap a little more. Chloe & Dee combined for 0 rebounds in 22 minutes. How is this possible?!

Turnovers. It was as bad as ever. We started out extremely crisp, but then we just threw up all over ourselves in the second half. Gregory was really careless (understandable for a freshman), and Ana was out of control at times (it's her only weakness). Then you just had what we've all come to expect - everybody else getting in their two silly turnovers. I really did feel like the starting 5 had some really good chemistry and shared the ball well together. But then when the reserves came in, the ball just ends up in the other team's hands for all sorts of various reasons.

Overall

We will be better than last year, and I think we will be substantially better than last year. The team has obviously grown, and I really believe Llunasa, Madi, and Robertson will give us chances to win a lot of games. I'm very concerned about production outside of those 3. I think Gregory has a chance to contribute (and will), but it might take her a little while before she breaks out.

Defensively, we do look better - we just need to play defense for an entire game. We forced shot clock violations yesterday in the first half, and that was a new trick.

I guess the scary thought for me is that we don't have reliable post play. I'm not even asking for someone to score. I'm asking for rebounding & defense. And the turnovers... we are still young and we still seem to panic and just hand over the basketball. I swear if we could eliminate the absurd live ball turnovers, we will win 5 more games.

Here's the bottom line - if we could actually go get a post player who could contribute right away next year, we will be a darned good basketball team next year. For this year, we're going to have to learn to scrap and fight or we won't make the tournament.

My Take:

All of the returning players look at least a little better.

The team just looked more organized.

Substantially fewer silly mistakes, such as passes without a purpose, dribbles to nowhere, absurd shots being taken, players doing things with the ball outside of their skill set.

Agree with the above that Ana, Taylor and Madi looked like good players.

Don't know why, but I had no expectations for Lemon. She is a good player and will give us good point play and will likely give us an answer to opposition teams with athletic point guards (something we didn't have last year).

Murcer looks good. Probably my favorite player.

Gabby: Don't have anything to say about last night, other than athletically it looks like she belongs. I think she becomes a good player.

All in all, I thought we looked better than we have in years. I think we will be better than last year. How much so, hard to say after one game.

I had the feeling that Lemon had not worked herself into the offense as yet. She had a role, and she played it.. It seemed that Sherri pulled her specifically twice after someone was able to drive the lane. Talked to her as soon as she hit the sidelines. Seemed like she was trying to teach defense on the fly to a JC transfer whom she needed at the reins.

I wasn't pleased with Gabby's decisions. But, when I looked at the stats, it was obvious that she found a way to get the ball into her hands a lot. Nice putback on the one rebound. She does have the size to contribute.
