Three weeks ago, I thought this one was in the bag. TCU has only four wins against OU: 1993 in Norman, 2005 in Fort Worth, 2011 in Fort Worth, and 2014 in Fort Worth. We have only won once by fewer than ten in recent games. TCU just hasn't been a real threat to OU. And, we beat them by 13 in Norman.
TCU lost its first three conference games: West Virginia in Fort Worth, Kansas and OU on the road. They were dead meat. Suddenly, they caught fire, winning five in a row that included West Virginia in Morgantown (OT) and Kansas State in Manhattan. Indeed, the games in Morgantown and Manhattan were cliffhangers. But, they are winning the cliffhangers. Oh, yes. They did beat Texas in Fort Worth, 79-77 in another cliffhanger. Kansas by ten and Tech by 22 in Fort Worth are their only "big" wins.
What happened? They are hitting 47% of their shots from the field, 37.3% from three, and 76.8% from the line. They don't waste free throws.
Okonkwo has emerged as one of the most difficult players in the Big Twelve to guard. She had 21 points and seven rebounds against us. She hits 55% from the field, 47% from three, and 91% from the line, while scoring 17.42 per game. She is the real deal. A lot of times we see kids score twenty, but shoot thirty to do it. She is efficient. She is averaging about 19 points in the Big Twelve.
Jordan Moore is more efficient: 14.53 ppg, 7.21 rebounds, while shooting 62%. She has improved in every aspect of her game this year as a junior.
Amber Ramirez, Toree Thompson, and Kianna Ray have all emerged as consistent shooters, around 42% from the field, 32-42% from three, 75-86% from the line. They just don't leave a lot on the table.
When I saw them lose at home to Yale earlier this year, I thought they would be last in the conference. Yale dominated them, made them look ragged. But, right now, we need to do what we do about as well as we can do it. Don't shoot stupid shots. Vivi is big enough to dominate TCU. But, Moore is quick enough to get Vivi in foul trouble. Keep your hands down. I expect Maddie to cover Okonkwo, and she can give her fits. But, TCU has a tendency to crash the boards and pick up cheap points with their quickness. You can't leave Okonkwo alone.
