OU self-reports violations

Norm, the recruit was punished for something DeCosta did. That does not sound right. It looked like DeCosta talked to the parent, instead of the girl. Who told the school about it? I wander if all state athletic associations have that rule.

That didn't make sense to me either.

True, but it's more so "punishment" for OU if in fact this is a recruit they truly want to pursue. These are rules for NCAA eligibility that apply to recruits, parents, family members, etc. But more so than that...DeCosta does not know the date that she can contact a recruit? There is a recruiting calendar for each sport that CLEARLY outlines the guidelines. Then you have the coaches that call on the right date, but the recruit is not the right grade level to receive calls. But calling on the wrong date is inexcusable to me...could've had a clean slate for self-reports.

As far as who reported...self-report. OU's compliance office notified the NCAA. And it's best to self-report before the over joyous recruit's mom tells all her fellow moms and the high school and club coaches that "OU CALLED FOR MY DAUGHTER'S SCHEDULE LAST WEEK. SHE'S AT THE TOP OF THEIR LIST! " That's when the foolishness starts. Well the (edit) high school and/or club/AAU (end edit) coach doesn't like OU and calls the NCAA, and the other moms that happen to know the recruiting calendar dates call the NCAA and wonder why their little Betsy has not been called and they are all in the same grade, or....you name it!

Yes, it makes sense that there is some accountability for the recruit as well. PARENTS AND RECRUITS (especially if little Betsy has any potential) should be held accountable to know the rules. The rules are offered at every NCAA sanctioned event via an educational session for the student-athlete. It is also always available on line. Protect your own child's interest!

I don't see that as a big deal at all. Look at some of the violations for men's basketball and you wonder, "how could they not know that"!

Mistakes happen, even though they should not. I was just glad Sherri's staff only had one mistake.

The NCAA. They are dumb enough to put us on probation for too much pasta while letting Kim recruit an entire team illegally.

I cringed when I saw "Oklahoma Violations" on ESPN-News yesterday, but I'd already read the story. I'm sure every Aggy and Longhorn was ready to celebrate. Then it was revealed to be the "excessive pasta" violation, and it was as if they were ripping the NCAA for excessive stupidity.
