OU WBB Discussion & Thoughts

How many bad, horrible shots did Chavez take last season? How many turnovers did OU have? It's bad, and no accountability is ever demanded, because it's a top-down approach.
Yes, she did take a lot of bad shots as a freshman.

Do you judge basketballl IQ by how much the coach controls each possession? If so, those are the players that really struggle at the next level because they never learn to play the game themselves. If you love teams where the coach controls every possession...I would argue they will struggle to become high IQ players. Mostly because thats a top down approach. Jennie's system is read & react...which puts pressure on the player to learn to play the game. It can be hard to watch, especially with young players...but can be really hard to defend when things are clicking.

Beers is playing in the WNBA because she grew her game the past two years vs. walking the ball up the floor, parking under the hoop and running a set for her. I'll still argue that Jennie has done more with a less talented roster than other teams in her 5 years here. But go ahead and measure IQ by shots a freshman takes and how many turnovers a team has. Madi Williams, Skylar Vann, Raegan Beers, Payton Verhulst all got better playing the game. Aaliyah will get better too and her ceiling is higher than most.

J -- I'm with Tom, you can't be serious. I don't know how old you are, but anyone that has grown kids, or has coached, will tell you that using your analysis would put every kid in the world under the age of about 25 with a "low IQ". For heaven's sake, she was a freshman, who was feeling the pressure to be our program's "savior" and live up to her billing and NIL reputation. That kind of pressure can and often does beat down mature college players, much less an 18 year old freshman. She needs to improve, and anyone that has made themselves what she is, is more than likely got the kind of competitive endurance and discipline to make herself do just that. I thought, all things considered, she was fantastic and I can't wait to see what she looks like next year.

All in all, I love what Jennie has done rebuilding the roster for next year. Maybe I am overly positive about the returning players, but just have a really high opinion of Chavez, Stewart, Smith, loftin and Williams. New kids sound pretty good. Love the little film I have seen of Bell. Haven't seen the portal kids play, but they sound pretty good on paper. Particularly, the Smith kid from Virginia.

I said a low basketball IQ. Not low IQ. Two different things. We haven't had guards who valued the ball in any of the 3 years she has been here. Jennie doesn't preach that. The top schools and coaches deeply do. Until OU does, they are a Sweet 16 school. If you are ok with that, that is fine. I wasn't insulting them. Just saying that from the top down, valuing the ball and making smart decisions with it, has not been coached by Jennie.

Alabama hired our strength and conditioning coach. Another opening on the staff.

I love this....

i hate agreeing with you but I do.
Anytime I acutally tune into a girls game, i see really bad fundamentals and really sloppy play.
Its hard to watch. And watching Chavez be so inefficient was bad.

Let's not pretend that the men's fundamentals are great, either. There are a lot of things you can blame poor fundamentals on. Three things at the top of the list are: 1) coaches from middle school on up spending more time on scrimmaging than fundamental drills. If you do the drills enough, being fundamentally sound becomes second nature but you have practice them every day. 2) Players trying to emulate what they see the pro players do, which is also not fundamentally sound. Everyone wants to shoot 3s or dunk. Learning a good jump stop isn't cool. 3) Half the time officials don't call walking, palming the ball or holding in games, which re-inforces bad habits.

So you agree then?
Bringing up the men's team is a red herring

I agree that fundamentals are lacking at every level for the men and women. Although I do sometimes watch the conference tournaments when teams like Marist or Quinipiac play. They are more fundamentally sound. They have to be because they are less athletic.

It’s not quite that simple. I don’t like the turnovers either, but some coaches/teams want pace and aggression even if it means more turnovers. That happens in both the men’s women’s games. With a year of college under her belt, I think Chavez will be better with her decision making. I tend to prefer a pass-first point guard, but that’s not the game right now.

I have asked this question before but does Jenny intend to fill the vacant assistant coaches positions

Lol I was asking about replacements for Paulina Love and Tyus not if we would have assistant coaches since we already have retained two. Wondering if the GM took one spot and we are only looking to fill 1 position. So I will wait rather than ask this group if they have heard any names. Thanks a bunch

Gm didn’t take one. Names will
Come soon. In the works.

So, curious, is the boys' game better? Edit: I wrote this before seeing the response above to your post; however, I am still curious if you believe the boys' game is better re fundamentals. I have no opinion on
this.
