The women's gymnastics team failed to record the highest score in qualifying for the super-six. It was the first time this season they failed to record the highest score in an event. Both LSU (198.275) and Florida (197.8125) had higher scores than the Sooners (197.725).
Both the higher scores came in the evening session and had different judges than did OU whose score came in the afternoon session. The Sooners while favored in multiple individual events had only two individuals (Lehrman and Nichols) tie with 4 others on the uneven parallel bars for their only individual championship. #2 LSU had 3 individual wins/ties for national championships.
Fortunately for the Sooners, as I understand it, the semifinal team scores are not carried forward, however I have not been able to verify this in writing. If correct, the Sooners (197.725) do not have to start the evening trailing LSU (198.275) by 0.55 which would be a massive lead as team scoring starts over for the finals.
OU scored better than 198.275 only once this season and that was against LSU, Georgia and Missouri in mid-February when the scored 198.350 to LSU's 197.700 and won all four events.
In the semifinals LSU got on a roll and out scored OU on 3 of the 4 events with OU winning only parallel bars and LSU taking the floor, beam and vault. The Sooners are going to have to step it up Saturday night. But we know they can do it as they thumped LSU in February.
K.J. Kindler's comments were: "It was tough out there for us. We started a little bit shaky on floor, lots of adrenaline and little extra steps. There were some uncharacteristic mistakes, but I think they were definitely working out some jitters that they had. We sort of settled in on vault and just got better as the day went on. We are really looking forward to tomorrow and having a chance to fight for a National Championship.”
