After a rough season, Jeff Capel has made references to the need for future Sooners to have a love of the game and the team aspects of basketball, a need for players that have “two feet” in and who care more about winning for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back.
When watching 2012 SG/SF Marcus Smart (Flower Mound Marcus) play basketball, it is evident that he fits into that criteria. Marcus is a highly-competitive player who makes his living on playing the right way and out-working his opponents.

this guy looks like a linebacker. Sam how would you compare him to some of the players that you've saw here in Oklahoma and at Real deal on the Rock? To me he looks like TJ Taylor.

Similar mindsets imo. Marcus has more of a post player's mentality, but I can certainly see the comparison.

I hope Capel has already offered this kid because he is exactly the type of guy you want in your program. Metroplexhoops named him the 2009-10 POY in the Dallas Metro.

No comparison between TJ and Marcus' in their games. TJ, prior to his injury, was explosive - laterally quick - even flashy. Would consistently play at or above the rim, even in traffic, and has a stroke good to well beyond the college three line.

Marcus is much more pedestrian in his approach. Though capable of playing at the rim, he's not nearly the athlete TJ is. Will likely be a few inches taller than TJ when all is said and done. Has more of a forward's mentality. Cannot defend an explosive shooting guard on the perimeter, like TJ can. Rebounds and plays in traffic like someone much, much bigger than he is.

Marcus is a straight-up winner, unlike almost anyone else in the North Texas area. Most every team he has been on, since he was in the third grade, has played at extremely high levels. His Team Texas teams were nationally ranked, his current Texas Assault team is winning big tournaments even playing up, and his Flower Mound Marcus HS team was one of the best 5-A (big schools) in Texas this past season, and will likely be one of the preseason favorites again this season.
