TULSA — Owasso coach Matt Sweeney had no intention of running a delay game.
“At that point in the game I always take layups and free throws,“ Sweeney said. “I’m calling out plays to run something.”
Intentional or not, a 3-minute offense in the fourth quarter worked Thursday afternoon.
No. 3 Owasso needed every bit of that time to hold off No. 7 Edmond Memorial in a 37-34 victory in a Class 6A girls basketball state quarterfinal at Tulsa Memorial.
Owasso (24-3) was clinging to a 33-31 lead with 4:45 remaining when star guards Terryn Milton and Mya Bhinhar remained dribbling and passing near the halfcourt line, the result of what Sweeney said was wrong personnel elsewhere on the floor. Bhinhar even passed up an open shot.
Finally, Milton, a Texas-Arlington signee, made a layup with 1:52 remaining.
“I knew it had to take at least 2 (minutes), and we were OK with that,” Milton said. “It all worked out. I’m glad we did it.”
Milton, a Texas-Arlington signee, finished with 10 points, while Tiya Douglass led with 15.
Edmond Memorial (20-8) still got close on the slim time remaining. Taylor Norman hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining. She then had a chance for a tying layup, but missed. Milton grabbed the round, was fouled and made a free throw.
Edmond Memorial......10 11 8 5 - 34

EM - Ka. Levings 11, Norman 8, Talbott 6, Ke. Levings 5. Ingram 4.
