Penzo was on the 2011 and 2013 U-16 FIBA teams for Puerto Rico. She was named to the All-Tournament team in 2013 along with Trisha Yearwood of Canada, Asia Durr, Katie Samuelson, and Lauren Cox. She was only the fifth leading scorer on the Puerto Rico team (five starters averaging from 7.2 to 11.8 ppg). But, she was the leading rebounder for Puerto Rico and the steals leader for the tournament. What caught my eye was one report that she was the most exciting player in the tournament. If you will notice the stats, she didn't really shoot all that well, about 35%, missing all threes, and only 50% from the line. She was a bit better in the 2011 tournament (7 of 8 from the line). I never got the idea that she was a great shooter.
Sherri said that she wasn't looking for a guard, but had to have Penzo when she saw her. She came in with Gabbi and LaNesia, after T'Ona the year before. She said that Penzo makes things happen. She did seem to show a lot of confidence last year for someone that wasn't playing, interacting with the team well during timeouts.
I didn't really know what to expect. It was interesting in the Winthrop game when she had 17 minutes, including a steal on her first play, almost in her first two. In the first part of the fourth quarter, she worked with Kay Kay, Maddie, Peyton, and Gabbi, and that unit moved the ball. They also played good defense. They were probably together about four or five minutes, and I liked it. She only played a minute against North Texas. She got another five minutes against BYU, but still had only one point on one of four from the line.
The offensive performance against Bradley was unexpected. She had 11 points, two steals, and two rebounds in 13 minutes. She also played good defense and moved the ball. But, she was four of five from the field and 3 of 4 from the line. I thought they credited her with a three during the game. Guess not. I don't know what to make of this yet.
She can pass. She and Maddie got a little too cute in one game passing it to each other. The flow works really well if she is with other passers. It makes me wonder. Is Derica's spot solid?
If Gioya redshirts, can you see the possibility that Penzo might be a starter if she has any offense at all? Apparently, she has more than I had anticipated. Her shooting form is good, and she doesn't get trapped when she goes inside. She seems to find a way to make it work. She scored once when trapped, passed off to Vivi on another, somehow passed it out to Peyton for a three---all when it looked like she was surrounded and trapped. She just doesn't seem to panic.
