It matters who is on defense. The red shirts were Woodard, Cousins, Hornbeak, Cam, and Spangler. Buddy was the pep squad. For the first time Woodard was on offense without Cousins, Hornbeak, or Buddy up into him constantly. He responded very well.
He was getting by defenders and easily creating space for himself to shoot. He had time to square himself and was knocking them down all afternoon. I'm not being critical. It is good that he caught a break from the pressure and had some good success. The confidence boost may just carry over.
The red shirts were relentless on defense. Possession after possession had Kruger clapping and saying "good job".
They still did plenty of running. But, Kruger has started to ease off them some. I'm sure their legs are dead. The last two practices will probably ease up more to get them freshened up some for the games.
Bennett had a hard to define practice today. He had what has become typical slam down put backs and altered shots and rebounds. But there was 4/5 times he was right there at the rim and didn't finish. That wasn't good. But, in a way that represents an improvement. He has come along ways to get to the point where he can make a post move to get space and muscle through a defender to get close. He is finding himself in spots that he couldn't have gotten to a year ago. He still needs to get better to be the kind of big that we need to get the job done against the top half of the conference.
Spangler had another good day with his mid range shots. But, as long as I am being critical of the bigs, I'll pick on him some. I don't see how he could work harder down low. But, the work isn't productive. He isn't getting himself open nearly enough. And now that he has made a few he is starting to stand there watching them. He isn't a good enough shooter to be doing that quite yet.
Guard play today was pretty good. The white shirts were so overmatched on both sides of the ball that it made the overall practice seem to be something less than their best effort.
The 6' 10" recruit made it to practice. He had more heft about him than what it looked like on the video.
