Putting pressure on the defense

I watched the Md-UCONN game last night and was impressed with how many players on both teams put pressure on the defense by driving inside. It created a lot of good jump shots, kick outs to the outside, or lay ups at the rim.

We seldom put that kind of pressure on the defense. We either rely on three pointers or pass inside to Kaylon. I'm not saying we should give up on either but, we need players who can bring a midrange game as well. The only player we have that has the ability to drive is Maddie. We might see her do that a couple of times in the first quarter on her way to racking up 10-12 points then she goes into a shell and stops scoring. Some use her previous knee injuries as an excuse. If she couldn't run after that I would agree. That's not the case. She runs fine, she just stops scoring which has nothing to do with her knees.

Gabbi doesn't have the ability to drive and neither does Derica.

T'ona and L. Williams can but with a high degree of risk and they are not good jump shooters.

That brings us to Gioya. She is the only consistent player who can penetrate and put pressure on the defense. I'm concerned she may be cautious when she returns which will dampen her effectiveness.

We need to recruit more players who have the ability to score from outside but has an equally good midrange game.

I've never seen Dungee play. Is this something within her skillset?

Excellent analysis, Norm.

The other things I saw in that game were:

1. The refs did not call many ticky tacky fouls. Had they, several players would have fouled out.

2. When a player drove to the inside and managed to get deep, the typical reaction was to let her drive and not to commit a foolish foul that would turn the play into 3 points instead of just 2. The time to stop a drive is before it gets underway.

3. They could make their free throws.

This has been a gripe of mine forever. DRob could drive but very few others could cause the defense problems. Think back and name some.

For three years, DRob didn't really have an alternative. She had no outside shot or pullup jumper.

Whitney and Stacy had that ability, prior to injuries. Chelsi had it, prior to injury. She lost a lot due to injury. I've heard that Kendra had it, but she came after an ACL. Maddie had it, and I hope that she re-develops it.

I have seen Dungee do it. But, she most often shoots the three or goes to the rim. With her strength, she is difficult to stop. Llanusa is very good at pull up jumpers.

You are correct, no one comes close to DRob.

This is not one of her strengths......not very quick and the ball handling isn't good enough to break an opponent down

I was waiting for this post to follow Norm's. The first post that you made on this board was a nice how do you do, indicating that we would be disappointed in Dungee and Mulkey.

I haven't seen enough of Dungee to have an opinion. But, I did notice that she got to the basket at will in an AAU game when the other Texas guards couldn't keep the opposition from stealing it out of their hands. I didn't see anyone stealing it from her. I don't really know how she stacks up in quickness. But, she was effective when others who are highly-recruited weren't.

With your negativity, I keep wondering how it is that Dungee made it through the tryouts and on to the U-16 team. Did they have different tryouts for her?

It's time to say some good things about OU recruits. We have others who are always negative.

That was my opinion as well. To penetrate well, you need to get the defender leaning one way and have a quick first step and crossover to gain the advantage. Ball handling and quickness are keys and while I have only seen her going against high school players, she did not seem to have the skills and athletic ability to use dribble drive to blow by defenders. At the D-1 level, it will be more difficult than in high school. I do expect her to knock down some outside shots and go inside for a decent number of rebounds. She has a college body and I'm counting on her to be physical on both ends of the court. Hopefully, she will also get to the line, which is a problem for our guards/wings now.

Ana has a quick first step. Not DRob quick but quick. She needs to improve her physical strength and ball handling and I think she will when she gets to OU.

Again you mention the one time she made it and nothing about the other two or three times she didn't make it. All i did was answer a question that was asked....if i would have said yes she do have the skills you are asking about and it didn'thappen then i would look like i didn't know what i am talking about.

You need to learn that everyone going to OU is perfect....just like everyone going to other colleges aren't perfect. Dungee isn't a dribble to the pull up type of player.

Keep in mind that syb still thinks Gibbs, Zander, and Jeffcoat were great players. :)

Dungee will be ready physically and mentally....she's older than all the kids due to being held back a year. Kind of like Higgs up there in Texas, that's why you see her adjustment to the game has been a little easier

I don't think I need to learn anything from you.

Now, Gabbi, for example, was the point guard of preference for this past team. Why is that? Would she be the point guard for another coach? She didn't score a lot. She just settled the team down. Different coaches want different things.

But, one coach wanted Dungee----after she went through trials, perhaps even against other players who might have made it in subsequent years. I don't know that other coaches even invited her. But, one coach saw that Dungee had what she wanted.

Know who that coach was?

Dungee doesn't look that explosive, but she's working on her game, I think she'll be a good a good catch and shoot shooter from mid range out to the 3 point line... Dungee and Rich will give us 2 guards who can dribble drive, it will be interesting to see if they will challenge Little and Manning for minutes early and often next season.

She used to have a trainer she worked with and her Dad took her to a gym often. Now that her parents are divorced, I'm not sure how much work she gets to put in outside of school. I do think she's a hard worker.

I see she works out with the dad of Jessica Washington, did Washington really consider OU? Or was she looking to play outside of state?

If OU can sign Patterson and Owens to go along with Llanusa it would be one of the most Athletic classes OU has ever signed. These are the types of players we need to keep up with Baylor and especially Texas...
