The portal effect. He is going to a school he feels like will get the most playing time hoping to play well and get a payday after year 1 or 2. I heard several mid major coaches talking about how they are selling that to players. Not all schools, but the coach’s on the show mentioned that as a recruiting tool.

This makes sense. He would get more money in Year 1 going to a major school. However, let's say he went to a major school and was the third or fourth best player on the team next season. If he wasn't ready for the NBA, he may not make as much money in Year 2 as he would if he was a big fish in a small pond.

Trae Young was obviously a one-and-done, but do you think for a second he would have put up a fraction of the numbers he put up at OU had he gone to Kentucky or Kansas? He certainly wouldn't have been drafted as high. Going to OU made him a lot more money and made him more NBA-ready than had he gone to either of those blue blood schools.
