Realistic expectation for Ty Lazenby

I think he will play a little. He's a scorer by nature, scorers are hard to keep off the the floor entirely.

I'm talking limited spot minutes but more than mop up duty.

So he is either going to be a huge surprise or just be a guy who gets in some games during the non-conference season.

That's too bad, and, I hope he doesn't read this thread. I kind of expected it to be a little more gracious than this for a scholarship player.

I'm with you. I hate it when our fans rag on one of our own student-athletes -- especially before any of us have even seen him practice, much less play in a game. (If someone in the thread has seen him this summer, I'll take back my remarks as regards that poster, but I'm guessing no one has.)

I hope Ty makes you guys eat your words many times over.

Like CoachTalk said, Lazenby is a scorer. He will have to battle James and even Sheperd for backup wing minutes. It may boil down to whoever has the hot hand that particular game.... or matchups.

He's a smart player and knows how to win.

Makes you wonder if race has anything to do with the expectation... I've never really hard of the 6'5'' 210 black guard with these credentials that was treated this way.

For example, the signing article would read like this if he were black and named Ebi Ere:

Lon Kruger added another piece to the University of Oklahoma men's basketball team on Wednesday with the signing of junior college All-American Ebi Ere.

Raised in Tulsa, Okla., Ere (6-5, 210) joins the Sooners after two seasons of junior college at Northern Oklahoma College Enid. In 2016-17, the guard averaged 22.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting .451 from the field, .359 from 3-point range and .864 from the foul line.

Ere's 22.9 points per game ranked sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association. He scored at least 20 points in 20 of his 29 games, including seven performances of at least 30 points. His outstanding sophomore season was recognized nationally when he was named an NJCAA first-team All-American – the first in NOC's program history.

“We're very excited about Ebi joining our program,” said Kruger. “He was one of the leading junior college scorers in the nation this past season and can score in a variety of ways. He has a great work ethic and is excited about becoming a Sooner.”

While at McClain High School, Ere led his team to three straight state titles and was named the MVP of all three state tournaments. His senior season, The Oklahoman named him to its “Super 5” team as one of the top five players in the state.

Ere is the fourth newcomer to sign with the Sooners in 2017, joining incoming freshmen Brady Manek, Hannes Polla and Trae Young.

Agree 100% you guys know if a guy gets in a groove, buckets come in a hurry. He has good size. Trae and Shep at the one but both can be on the floor at the same time... Odomes, James, Kam at the 2/3 We need a 4th guard there at times. It has to be him. There isnt anyone else.

We missed on the Grad Transfers, it happens.

He's 6'5 210, thats more weight than Kam.

Race has nothing to do with it. Ere was a better athlete. Ty isnt an elite athlete. He's not a stiff, but not going to wow you with Athletic ability.

Be curious to see if his shot technique and ability got better in juco. He said during an interview that he put on over 15 pounds, and will obviously continue to get bigger working in a high level D1 weight program.

Has anyone seen him in practice?

I'm guessing you've seen Lazenby play, Coach. I'm also guessing that almost no one else here has. So, if I'm correct, the rush to discredit him really is off-putting.

David Godbold was pretty roundly dismissed in the early stages of his career, too, and as I recall, he wasn't the most athletic of players, either. But he certainly made a valuable contribution during his time at OU. Johnny Gilbert is another player whose abilities were frequently called into question and even mocked, and he ended his Sooner career a fan favorite.

I guess I don't see what's wrong with just taking a wait-and-see attitude towards our new players, rather than writing them off before we've even seen them in action.

Ive seen him a lot. I think he can help us this year. The only thing he knows is basketball. He has the frame, the skill set, etc.

Im not dismissing him, I know in my first post i was a tad skiddish but game speed he will pick up fairly quickly. Had a great year, great National tourney to end the year.

I've seen him about 10 times. Solid mid-major player imo. Average defender, average athlete, not a great 3pt shooter. Good size, good mid range & in game, knows how to play.

Has anyone seen him in practice? Is he keeping up with James, McGusty, etc?
