Rice could be in trouble...

They're not in trouble.

Which sucks because treating a person like that is terrible.

But the NCAA clearly already knew about these incidents, because they granted him a hardship waiver last spring.

This is just the first time the media has gotten the story.

Would be very surprised if anything came of it, since the NCAA has done nothing so far.

To play a little devils advocate. The assistant coach who was also forigen, was not retained. So the 3 players decided they wanted to leave and made up these claims. All three could then back it up to the NCAA that this occured. The NCAA granted the hardship waivers and they got out of Houston. May not be true but feasible.

I have a hard time beleving the AD was making those kind of comments. They may have other students make them, but the AD has to be smarter then that,

That's why I said if true, but lets not act like the ncaa is swift to act on anything

Lots of stupid ADs around, look at Texas or Penn State to name two high profile ones.

I have a hard time believing collusion on their parts, of course they are Persians and Arabs and that may color your thinking on this.

Why is it hard to believe that the AD was a racist or an idiot? Go to any country club in America, and you'll find plenty of wealthy, successful people who are also racists. Not sure why being an athletic director at Rice would preclude that?

Are you a racist if you jokingly ask three guys you know speaking Arabic if they are having an Al Qaeda meeting? Why is it that every time a minority is offended the offending person is some horrible racist. Maybe the offending person just said something stupid.

I also question why you tie racism to wealthy, successful people at country clubs. Racism is a human flaw, not a flaw of wealthy white men.

Is this serious? Of course it's racist to ask people who are speaking Arabic if they're having an Al-Qaeda meeting. How is that at all confusing? I guess people who aren't necessarily racist can say racist things so it doesn't necessarily make him racist, but it's unquestionably a racist statement.

Really? Is it racist to say white people can't jump or dance? To me statements like this are nothing more than off color jokes based on stereotypes.

I believe racism requires an actual belief that someone is inferior based on their race. I cannot remotely determine from an off color joke whether that belief exists, especially when it is taken out of context. Perhaps it is insensitive or stupid but that doesn't necessarily mean the person making the comment believes they are superior or the other person is inferior based on race.

Being racist and making a racist comment are two different things. If you make a racist comment, you aren't necessarily a racist. The comment you described is unequivocally a racist comment. It doesn't mean that the person making it is a racist.

Making fun of people dancing and comparing someone to a terrorism organization that aims at killing Americans might be a bit of a reach.

Yeah, people not being able to dance is really comparable to a world-reviled terrorist group :facepalm

And no, racism does not require a belief that someone is inferior. Racial intolerance and racial hatred are forms of racism. In fact, genuine beliefs of racial superiority have been gone from society for hundreds of years, for the most part. Most racists today just look down on other groups because they are different, and they personally are ignorant, hateful people.

Regardless, it's possible that this guy genuinely has no racial prejudices. In that case, he is just a colossal idiot with no sense of acceptable public behavior, which is not an acceptable character trait in a university athletic department. In any case, if he did in fact make these comments, he will be out of a job shortly, and deservedly so.

I"m not tying racism to wealthy successful people. Simply pointing out that the fact that this guy is wealthy and successful is not an indicator that he wouldnt' be a racist, contrary to what others in this thread were saying. Racism is certainly not limited to the wealthy and successful. Plenty of poor idiots living in squalor looking down on other races as well.

So, you would not consider a terrorist to be an inferior person to a non-terrorist basketball player?

Assuming a white guy can't jump is probably also racist (to fit your definition -- inferior based on his race) but it's much less consequential than suggesting someone's a terrorist.

1. If you ask the terrorist question of someone you know well and it's a clear joke, it's not racist. If it's said to someone who you don't have that relationship with or said in a way that isn't clearly joking, then yeah, it's kinda racist.

2. If those things are said about white people in a demeaning or belittling way (and not as a joke), then yeah, it's kinda racist, too.

3. The claim isn't that a single comment indicated rampant racism. The claim is that rampant racism indicated rampant racism. That was just one example of many.

4. You can't tell from one comment if racism exists. But the players and coach in question who dealt with the guy every day felt it did. I'd defer to them.

Very good discussion. Very good points being made......
