Sampson mentioned Mike Rice article.

The absolute last thing we need is the Federal Government getting involved.
 
It's ironic that Whitlock mentions Sampson in that light (treated more poorly than he should have been given what he did), yet Whitlock was leading the charge against him back in the day.
I haven't followed Whitlock that closely over the years, but I do remember him defending Sampson (including championing his hiring at Indiana). I believe he was okay with the decision to fire Sampson (though I don't recall him "leading the charge," as I think they actually had a good relationship) not because Kelvin did anything inherently wrong, but because he was stupid enough to get caught twice for the same thing.
