TULSA — It may have been the state tournament, but Thursday’s first-round game quickly started looking like each of the No. 3 Sand Springs girls’ 23 previous victories
The Sandites scored the first 12 points and coasted to a 42-24 triumph over No. 13 Mustang in Memorial Veterans Arena, Sand Springs is 24-1 and all 24 wins were by double-digit margins.
Things might be closer when the Sandites face No. 4 Edmond Deer Creek in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday at the Mabee Center. The Antlers rallied past Booker T. Washiongton 49-42.
“Deer Creek has great players, and Totsy Manning is one of the best coaches,” Sand Springs coach Dustin Morrow said. “but when you get to the state semifinals, you expect to play somebody that’s good.”
Holly Kersgieter had 16 points, Sydney Pennington contributed nine points and Destiny Johnson added eight as Sand Springs advanced to the semifinals for the first time in 23 years.
