In five conference games, the bench has scored 83 points, or 16.6 per game. Maddie has 28 of those, mostly in the past two games.
The bench outscored the TCU bench 19-5, and the Texas bench, 25-17.
What is probably as important is that the bench has provided minutes: 70 against Texas, 55 against TCU (nobody in foul trouble). In five conference games, the bench has played 309 minutes, or 61.8 minutes per game. This means that the starters only have to play 691 minutes, 138.2 per starter which translates to 27.64 minutes per game per starter. Thus far, it has been enough.
Let's not talk about Maddie. I'm going to assume that she is one of the six starters for the time being. In the last two games, she is getting starting minutes and responsibility.
Minutes per game in conference play:
LaNesia 11.4
Vionise 11.0 didn't play in one game.
T'Ona 10.0
Nicole 8.2
McKenna 8.0 didn't play in one game
Derica 7.5 has only played in two games
Whitney and Shaya have only played two minutes in conference play.
It seems that the seventh player right now is Vivi. In the past two games, she has replaced Kay Kay for 16 and 8 minutes, respectively. Sherri has said that she and McKenna bring different things, and that we will use them as the situation dictates. In both a game against Texas' giants and TCU's guards, Vivi got the call. She seems a bit cooler under pressure than McKenna. Vivi has the size and raw skills to contend with the best centers in the country. She is cutting down on mistakes, and she isn't exactly immobile. She has limited range, and she takes it to the rim. Sherri said that she is an extremely quick learner who only has to be told what defense they want to run, and she knows what to do. She seems to be the one who is going to give Kay Kay rest.
LaNesia is getting minutes, but those may begin to decline now that Maddie has emerged. She can get to the rim, and she is valuable in making things happen. Right now, that doesn't seem to be the problem that it once was. She needs to develop an outside shot to go with her short jumper and drives to the basket. I haven't watched her on defense yet.
T'Ona does seem to be the player who is going to come in for a breather for Gabbi. She is a pure point. She has learned some offensive moves. Occasionally, she does make a silly pass that could lead to bench time, and has. But, she is also a natural born thief on defense. She runs the break well. Quick hands. I don't know that her minutes will decline. She does bring time for rest without hurting the team, usually.
Korny needs to slow down. Maddie's emergence, as well as Gioya's, has cut into her time. She seems to be trying too hard right now. She has the ability, but needs to quit making mistakes. She will rest Gioya and Sharane. But, she needs to work with what they are doing rather than trying to add to it.
McKenna has the ability, and she has demonstrated that she can play. Recently, she has rushed some things, resulting in some mistakes. Vivi isn't making those mistakes. We have enough good things happening, and we don't need mistakes. She will be of value as soon as she settles down. She is too much talent not to play.
I don't know what Shaya's status is. Whitney seems to be the heart.
