We have basketball donors with clout?

What donors actually care enough to put pressure on Castiglione? Certainly not the same ones who buy season tickets and never show up.

Toby Keith?

Clay Bennett has courtside seats. At least he had them Blake's sophomore year. Still, not gonna happen from him.

Who else we got?

PS - Bring back Top Daug!

What about Trav or Ada?

I am a minnow, a very small fish. A shrimp compared to Whales.

Regarding a buyout. There has to be a buyout clause. Joe is an experienced professional and would not make a basic error like that.

The problem is that Joe may not want to pay the buyout, as overall athletic donations are likely down due to the economic downturn. Buyout money has to come from somewhere.

Also, there may still be some big basketball donors that are solidly in Coach Capel’s camp. I don’t know this for a fact, but it is very possible.

Also, Boren may not let Joe do as he pleases anyway. It could be that Joe is now caught between a rock and a hard place. If Boren likes Capel, or Molly likes Kanika, then little else matters.

But, this all just speculation.

You make some good points. The reality is once a politician, always a politician. We will find out at the end of the season just how important Men's Basketball is at the University of Oklahoma. Loyal fans like you deserve better.

How low does a program have to fall before the fans stop renewing their season tickets and spend their entertainment dollar on something other than OU basketball?

I have to believe that has already happened. How many people do you think gave up their OU season tickets this year in favor of Thunder tix? I'm guessing it's a sizeable number.

It may seem like small potatoes to some, but the removal of TopDaug without so much as a warning shows that the administration doesn't have much respect for the history of OU Basketball.

But, to me, this is a one issue topic: the men's team is the only other sport besides football that turns a profit on campus. That'll be what decides Capel's fate. If he sends the men into the red on the books then he'll be gone.

Only thing that matters, think you still have one or two years before this happens though.

I see Lloyd Noble a couple of times a week, not sure if he's a big time donor anymore. I'll ask his opinion.

I think this concern may be overrated. If you care enough to buy season tix, then you probably also have a degree of university pride and allegiance. You might switch for a year while one team is languishing and one is thriving, but no one I know will say that because of one reason or another that they would stop buying OU season tix and start buying Thunder.

Most of my friends are fans of both, although none are season ticket holders of either. They buy tickets to either team depending on matchup and price.

Last time I looked Top Daug had'nt won a game for OU yet??Go Sooners!!!!

Isn't part of the what makes Joe C and Boren great people to work for is that they let you do your job. It seems to me Boren should not and would not tell Joe C. what to do.

Not that I disagree with you, but Top Daug was brought in sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. The wrestling team had a similar mascot, too. At around the same time, Bliss requested or recommended the University put together a "pom-pon" squad.

Also added in the 80's was that horrible slanted square interlocking OU:

I understand why the logo above was removed (it is ugly) and the University went to 1 logo which is:

I liked Top Daug and thought he was great entertainment, however, as an OU fan/alum living in Kansas City, I grew tired of constant questions of why we had a dog as our mascot and what did that have to do with the land run or the official mascot (sooners). I do think the horse-pigs are ugly but at least they can be connected to a sooner or the land run.

I think the university made a mistake when they allowed Bliss and Tubbs to create whatever mascots, logo's, and cheerleading teams they wanted for basketball instead of trying to keep everything consistent. They did start using the pom's at football games at around the same time as they were created for basketball, but Top Daug rarely if ever made an appearance at a football game. I do believe we had the slanted OU logo in the endzones of Owen Field in the 80's...but maybe I'm wrong.

To say the slanted logo was loathsome is to be far too kind and gentle. It was ugly then; it's ugly now. We already had (and thankfully still retain) a logo of long standing. What possible need did we have for a new one?

Let oswho change their logos and look every two or three years. OU has no need for such desperate acts to generate interest.

The worst part is, you still see the slanted logo used on some of our television appearances (in the graphics). Not on ESPN or ABC, but I know I've seen a game on CBS or maybe TBS or versus that had the slanted logo. I think it was the sun bowl game, but maybe a few years back further. I remember thinking at the time the broadcasting company was trying to stick it to us by using the old logo that was not official.
