I know we shouldn’t be posting football threads, but I doubt there is an OU fan on the planet not excited that Mike Stoops has been fired!!!!

I’m wondering if the decision was taken out out of Riley’s hands since Stoops met today with both Riley and school president James Gallogly.

I will sleep great tonight. This was about 3.5 years overdue. Now, the pressure will be on Riley to get a home run hire in the offseason.

I told a friend of mine after the game the loss would be worth it if Mike got fired. I didn’t think it would happen until after the season was over.

Totally unexpected or not, this is great news! Too bad he wasn’t smart enough to take himself out two to three years ago.

Should have been fired 3.5 years ago or after rose bowl or after army game when the moron played our normal package against a very specialized offense... (option) and then being dumb enough to say we're not built to stop army... lololol wow

He used to be good 15 some years ago but has been dog poop for a loooong time

He ain't the only one that should be gone

I bet he ends up at Kentucky in some way under his brother Mark. Probably not DC, but a position assistant or something.

I kind of doubt it......that would be a bad move for both.

Mike should sit out a couple of seasons or retire to the good life.

Oklahoma ain't built to stop Army but Duke is...DUKE

Our poor performance against Army was just one of many in the last couple of years that pointed to a serious problem with Mike’s inability to get his players ready on game day. No way a Duke defense should ever be better than OU at stopping the triple option.

I think Mike would have been fired long ago if Baker Mayfield ‘s high scoring offense had not continued to win close games. Fans tend to give the DC a pass when poor defense does not result in a loss.

Duke plays Georgia Tech every year, who runs the same offense. Some of the ACC schools (including Duke) have hired special consultants to come in and work with them on the option just because of Georgia Tech...

The option is just hard to stop though... its tried and true. Always works, period. Georgia Tech has 1000 yards rushing, 16 rushing touchdowns, and have scored on every offensive possession the last two games. Pretty cool stat.

That being said.... Mike Stoops needed to go. Not because of the Army game, but just body of work. Too much talent to be that bad on defense.

Yes, it was. I was clearly harsh with the thread title, and wish I had given it more thought. It was the first time in my 55+ years on this planet I took pleasure in someone in sports losing their job. But I can’t hide that it was an uninhibited reaction when an OU fan called me to break the news.

Now that I’ve had plenty of time to chill, I’ll just wish the man all the best of luck and happiness. I’ll also think back to where we were 20 years ago this October before the Stoops brothers entered our sports lives.

I haven't read Mike Stoops' statement yet, but I don't really need to. I'm neither happy nor excited that Mike was fired, but it's not because I wanted him to stay. It was past time for both Mike and OU to move on; his ability to put a good product on the field ended several years ago.

It's just sad to know that it had to come to this. I have no ill will toward Mike Stoops. In fact, I wish him the best and hope he can somehow resurrect what he once was and become relevant again as a defensive coach.

This. Mike lost his ability to read and call a defense effectively several years ago. I just hope we don't become taco tech easy defensively.

I’m guessing the new DC will have carte blanche to make any changes he wants to the defensive staff. Honestly, I expect both Kish and Cooks will be gone after the season ends. I thinks Thibs and probably Diaco are safe. Not sure about Ruffin after this season. He’s more of an advisor to Riley.

I bet Riley will have tons of resumes’ from coaches wanting the job. This gives him plenty of time to openly research and evaluate candidates.

I too wanted Mike Stoops gone. Badly. I thought it would happen after the season. The only time I ever rooted for OU to lose was at the end of John Blake’s tenure. Their last game was against Texas Tech (Sonny Dykes was their coach) and I was afraid a win might save his job for another year. To my chagrin OU won but fired Blake anyway.

Cooks is by far the best recruiter on the defensive side. Most of the players are very young.

Defense never seemed to play with a sense of urgency as if they firmly believed the offense would be able to bail them out in the end. The other side of the ball (speaking of the same team) should not dictate your mindset as you have your own responsibility to uphold. It would be nice if a simple change actually led to meaningful results as opposed to it being the chess pieces dressed in uniform being the problem.
