First, good to see the girls play to the end/buzzer.

Second, Maddie is our best player and until and unless she accepts that fact and plays like it, we will struggle and never reach our potential. She was recruited to be a tall point. She has those types of ball skills. But, she is entirely too selfish and it is harming this team. I would sit her down and make her watch the game if she is unwilling to shoot the ball when she is open and within 10 feet. Time and again, she is passing up shots and, worse yet, she is passing to others in traffic and either turning the ball over or giving it to someone that is less apt to make shot than her. In my view, she is choosing not to be the best player on the court, and it is hurting her team. Likely, she is worried about the perception of other players regarding her being selfish. This concern acts as a ceiling on her, and more importantly, her team.

Third, for the most part and save and except Maddie turning down one shot after another, I liked the our shot selection. Kids just have to make the shots.

Fourth, interior players need to worry more about blocking out when the first shot is taken to prevent a follow up shot than defending the first shot. JMO. On the inside and when a team has a tall post like Cal, Nancy is the only player capable of "fronting", everyone else just has the ball thrown over their head and then is out of position to prevent a second shot. Again, JMO.

Fifth, SC is handling Mulkey real well. We are better when she is on the floor, but she tires easily and then is not only ineffective but fouls instead of defends. At least in my opinion, we are clearly better when she is in the game. I think sherri is handling her correctly by extending her time off the court during time outs, putting her in and out in short burst, etc. BTW, I liked all of her shots even though she missed some. I hope the staff is telling her the same thing.

And finally, hopefully the game was a good learning experience and we will grow from it.
