Villanova is very good obviously. They’re REALLY physical, and I like that style of play..... no skinny guys getting pushed around. They’re also fast, athletic, deep, great shooters, outstanding both on offense and defense, etc. None of their top 7-8 players in the rotation are seniors although Jalen Brunson and 1-2 others will probably declare for the NBA. Jay Wright has it going on.
Brunson is good, and very physical. He reminded me of Jevon Carter on a better team although I think he’s a better passer than Carter. When Brunson dribble drives to the basket, he doesn’t rely on his quickness so much. Instead he’s kind of a bully..... which reminds me of some of the PG play under Kelvin. He often uses his shoulder to clear his defender out, and then steps back for his shot. I’m a little surprised he doesn’t get called for more offensive fouls.... a lot of his plays I thought were borderline. This coming from a former HS referee.
I hope OU can get that style of play. It’s OK to play fast but also be physical. It’s amazing how many of the games end with scores in the 50’s or low 60’s when the completion gets tough. There’s a saying in golf that you drive for show, but putt for dough. My analogy for basketball is you can play up-tempo for show, but you better be able to play defense for dough. Villanova “gets it”.
